THE CANARY ISLANDS. Madrid, January 27. Reports have been received that German submarines are literally blockading the Canary Islands, and are not sparing Spanish ships. The islanders are protesting against tho action of Germany in extending the submarine danger zone.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. U-BOAT BOMBED BY FRENCH AIRSHIP. Paris, January 27. ' A French airship throw _ several bombs on a submarine and bits were observed, and she became unsteady. A mine-sweoper thereupon fired shots at the U-boat. The shells apparently took effect, and a largo patch of oil remained—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. NEW SPANISH STEAMER SUNK. (Rec. January 28, 8.35 p.m.) Madrid, 27. The new Spanish steamer iiiralda, 4200 tons, was. bombed and sunk off Guardia. Tho attacking submarine carried neither name nor number. The newspapers. are indignantly protesting against tho German submarine attacks, j -Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.
