UNRULY FIREMEN
ATTACK ON WHARF SENTRIES. A clash between some firemen and the sentries on duty at the Glasgow Wharf barrier on Saturday evening gave riso to a little excitement on the waterfront. It appears that the sentry on duty was instructed by the master of a vessel lying at the Glasgow Wharf to prevent a certain fireman from going ashore again. Tho captain then left for the city, and when darkness came on seven or eight firemen, including the man the sentry had been instructed to stop, came along the wharf and endeavoured to get ashore. The sentry carried out ''nstrnctions as regarded tho ono man, but told tho others they were free to go ashore without him. The men, however, all returned to tho ship and gathered on tho forecastle head of the vossel overlooking the sentries' beat, and for half an hour hurled potatoos, refuse, and coal at the sentries. The corporal of the guard warned tho firemen to desist, and also asked the ship's quarter-master on duty at the gangway to order the men away from the forecastle to prevent trouble. 'When' the quarter-master went forward, he, too, was pelted, but the firemen subsequently withdrew for a time, but later they acain took up their .stand on the forecastle, and kept up a <toady shower of missiles. . As the only means of checking the firemen, the sergeantmajor of the guard ordered the . corporal to fire upon the vessel, not with the intention of liittin?-the men, hut merely to warn them that drastic steps would be taken if the disturbance eontinned. One round was fired, the shots striking the vessel's side underneath where tho firemen were standing, and the firemen beat a hasty retreat, leavina the sentries in peace. The guard was then called out-, and the sergeant-major, .accompanied by tho corporal of tho guard, interviewed the captain of the ship in Ins caMn. We captain was told that the guard inr tended to arrest the boatswain on a chargc of using obscene language and, inciting the crew to obstruct the guard in the course of their duty. The captain explained that if that were done the ship would be detained,, as she was to sail earlv on the following morning. Ifc was clccided to leave the matter in the hands of the Assistant ProvostMarshal.
