MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr.'S.'E. M'Carthy, S.M., presided - at the Magistrate's Court oil Saturday, and dealt with the police cases. Mary Ryder was charged that on January 25 she did loiter iit Kent terrace for tho purpose of prostitution, contrary to tho War Regulations. She had a bad record. Accused was convicted and sentenced to twelve months imprisonment. . . For insobriety. William Lynch and Wiliiani Patterson tvere each fined 205., in default seven days' imprisonment. Patrick Simmott was also fined, with the option of fourteen days' imprisoninent. Daniel M'Farlane, i againstwhom there were three previous convictions, was remanded till Monday, to'see if he can bo sent to the InebnatesV Home at Rotoroa. A first offender, a soldier, was ordered to be handed over to the military authorities'; . Charles Mack was .with being drunk, and also .with using obscene ■language'in Buckle Street. It was stated in evidence that defendant was in. tie Salvation Army H<>mc m Buckle Street, and created a disturbance. A constable was summoned, and the man was put out; Ho returned to the liouio a second time, and wlulo being ejertod bv .'two constables (it becamu necessary to call-in another constable), he made use of tho.obsceno language. There were several-previous convictions against tho ■defendant, who was scn- ' fenced to a. month's imprisonment for using the 6bscono' : language, and conviitud and discharged for drunkenness. Three charges wero preferred against '•'David I. Peterson:. (1) "ljeing found dpuili, (2) using obsccnc language m Sace!s Lane,- and (3) resisting. Const;ii. ■ j Georgo Dowling whilo in the execution of his duty. The defendant said lie was arrested in the doorway of his own homo. He was not sober, but he was. not drunk., lie was informed by tho Magistrate that I'.o could not do as ho liked. Ho was convicted and sentenced to six months' impisonnient for using obsceno language, and on the other two charges wus convicted and discharged. Charles Sullivan, an articled seaman o:i a- scow in port,. was charged with unlawfully absenting himself from his ship. Tho captain:of the vessel said the man- had caused great trouble; tho- vessel had been roady. to sail for two days,, but had been held up through tho absence of the defendant. The captain said that Sullivan was a good inan at sea, but in port drink was his trouble. Ho was convicted and ordered to be handed over to tho captain on board tho vessel. On tho application of Chicf-Detcctivo .Boddam a remand till Friday next was granted in tho caso of William Howard Bromley Booth, who was charged with, the'theft at Sydney of sixty-four dozen reels of white cotton twine, valuod at £76 165., the property of Franklin Haywood and others. THE SPEED LIMIT, Cecil Brown was charged with driving his motor-car round tho corner at Kilbirnio Crescent into Seatoun Road at a greater speed than six miles an hour. Several witnesses wero called on both sides. For tho, prosecution itnvas ak loged that tho speed was about fifteen miles an hour, and that a young lady who was walking across the street reading a newspaper was knocked down. ' For tho defence it -was stated that tho ■ car was slowed down rounding tho corner, and the 'speed was accelerated in tho straight,- but was agait immediately siowed down when the lady was seen in tho street. 'J ho horn was blown twice. The young lady who was knocked down heard nothing until the car knocked her down. Tho Magistrate, after reviewing the ovidence, i recorded a conviction, and imixwed a lino of <JOs. and costs.
