MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES. Mr. S. B. M'Ciirthy, S.M., was on thn bench afc the Magistrate's Court yesterday. John Cicorge Orr pleaded guilty to obtaining board and lodging to the amount of £1 17s. at Otaki by menns of false pretences. It was stated by Inspector 'Marsack that the defendant and anolhgi'.innu lml been in the military police and had been stationed at Otiiki, and by arrangement with the Defence authorities the military police were hoarded at the boardinghouse. The two men left the military police, and later being in. Or.nki they went to the boardinghouse and represented that they were still in the military police, and were in plain clothos because they were on secret service. Mr. H. F. O'Leary, who appeared for the defendant, stated that Orr waa dominated by tho other man, who was older. It was this other man who made all the statements to the boardinghouse keeper. Defendant was 20 years of ajre. Orr was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and was ordered to report to the probation officer fortnightly for a period of twelve months, and was further ordered to pay £1 ] 75., the amount of the board and lodging. For committing a breach of his prohibition order, Patrick J. Sheeny, who had been previously convicted, was fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment, and Herbert Maloney and Elijah Norman Ellis, for similar offences, were each fined 405., with the alternative of serving seven days in gaol.
Richard Wakelin and Eoberfc Scott Cashman pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour in Orna Street, and lvero each fined 20a. and costs, in default seven days' imprisonment. Convicted of. using obscene language. Thomas Shannon was lined £5 and costs, in default one month's imprisonment; and Ada Elizabeth Knotb was fined £o and costs, with tbe alternative of thirty days' imprisonment, and a prohibition order to issue agaiust her to be in force for twelve months.
Walter Turner and John Millanta, licensed hawkers, who failed to move their barrows when requested to do so', were convicted and discharged. It was explained on their behalf that having a license they were under the. impression that they could sell anywhere. For hawking without a license, James M'Donald was fined 20s. and costs. WANDERING STOCK. For allowing stock to wand or, Thomas Albright, Arthur Edmund, Chris. Hansen, and Charles Murphy were each fined 10s and 17s 6d costs. Osmond Disby, on two charges, was fined 40s. ond costs on each charge; and Alfred Bradley, an old offender, was fined £5 and costs. STREET BY-LAWS. For reckless driving, George, Gray was fined £5 and costs. For riding a horse- furiously in Manners Street, Norman Hicks was fined £5 and costs. Albert W. G. Djmock was fined 20s. and costs for having no tail light on his motor-aar. BREACH OF GAME LAWS. Henry G. Black was convicted of shooting hares out of season at Orocga Oronga, and was fined 20s.' and costs, Joan Charles Dick convictett of fishing for trout in the Wainui-o-Mata without ft license was fined £2 and costs. MILK PROSECUTION. Staveloy and Weight, dairymen, tvero fined £10 and costs for soiling milk deficient in butter-fat. The George Nash Company was charged with soiling milk containing li per cent, added water on September .7, 1917. The company has fince gone into voluntary liquidation. The company was convicted and fined £20 and costs,
