AURA ON A REEF.. Suva, January 17. The interinsular steamer Amra, which ■«as instrumental, under Captain Day in capturing Von Uickner and the men with him, was for five hours on tho Hone Shoe .Keel, sustaining damage neccßitating her return to her home port in Australia. Captain 11. K. Gosling was in charge.
Tho vessel struck at. 1 a.m. during a heavy rain and wind storm. For a time thinks looked very serious, and lifebelts were served, out to passengers and crew.
The Marine Board found that, considering the thick weather, which pieveutcd the master from taking eross bearings of tho Narai and . Koro lights, it wouid have been more prudent to have steered a course between Horse Shoe Reef and the Koro light; that the hearings, with the log, should have indicated to the mantor of the vessel that the s.hip had seW to the northward, and that the course ' set might not be a safe course: that, the facts disclosed indicated tho advisability of greater caution being exercised in the navigation of the ship in the future.
The board also decided there was no need for a formal investigation-Special correspondent to Auckland "Mar."
Captain J. Stringer has taken over the command of a Union Company's steamer formerly commanded by Captain A. T. Norton.

Tho shortage of steamers for tho intercolonial trade is not C e only troublo that merchants have to face at the present time. Advice just- rectived by mail from Sydney is to the effect that the firms over there have no,v Ui make a statutory declaration before, obtaining shipping permits from 'he Customs on all intended shipments to New Zealand, Documents to hand already bear the certification that they have been duly passed by the Customs. No doubt this is done to prevent shipments going to any alien enemies.
The Himitangi will arrive to-day from Chatham Islands and Lyttelton to load for Waitangi and Pitt Islands. She will sail at noon to-morrow.
The Anchor Company's Alexander is duo from Wanganui on Sunday, and will sail on Monday for Nelson, Westport. and Greymouth. The Terawhiti will go ono the slip today for a general overhaul, which will take Boveral days.
Tho Auckland Harbour Board have notified the Marine Department that the dredgers Hapai and 121, also suction dredgers Nos. 1 and 2. are now moored to the northward of the north-east corner of the Freeman's Bay Reclamation. Thf Hapai and dredger 121 are moored ap proximately 560 ft. and 400 ft. respectively N. by E. (mag.) from the north-east corner of the reclamation, and each of these dredgers has six moorings laid out in N., S., E.. and W. directions. Suction dredgers Nos.-l and 2 are moored approximately 200 ft. and 450 ft. respectively N.N.W. (mag.) from tho north-east corner of the reclamation, and each dredger has four moorings laid out in N.E., S.E., S.W., and N.W. directions. These four dredgers are now laid up, and will remain in the abovementioned positions indefinitely. The new marine insurance scheme adopted by tho Imperial Government is determined to be made a profitable business, oven if it is found necessary to pay for it by deduction from other departments. For instance, the rate of requisitioned liners has been increased' from 5 to 9 per cent, for 91 days, but, states "Fairplay," judging from the speech dealing with reduced losses by submarines delivered by Sir. Lloyd George about August, there is no Justification for indjeasing the rate by 80 per cent. The effect, however, will be that the profit on the running of the requisitioned liners will be reduced materially. The adoption of the new rates may result in a loss being shown on Borne voyages, and these--losses will have to be financed by the ma- agers until they can secure repayment from the Government.
The Defender arrived last night from Hokitika, and this morning will discharge a cargo of timber. She is to sail tomorrow night for Hokitika.- v -
