NOTES AND COMMENTS
fBY GIENCOE.I Entries for all events at tire Wanganui Cup Meeting close to-night at 9.30. Handicaps for the C.J.G. Mid-summer Meeting arc due to-duy. The highly priced Torfrcda, a full-sister to Hymestru, ■ accompanied J. Jamieson's team to Trcnthatn, but was not raced. She was takeu to the course on each day of the races and was kept in the saddling paddock for a couple of hours. Sho may bo raced at tho Mid-summer Meeting at Kiccartou. '■* At the Epsom races on January 12, Mr. W. Biordun's horse Half-a-Glass was heaten by a narrow margin in tho Turf Club Cup. On the same day 11. Cairns rode St. Ibex, winner of the High-Weight Welter Handicap. Kilowatt, who was taken to Sydney with Biplano and sold there, won tho Trial Handicap at Hobart. this month. This was his first success in a race. In tho telegraphed prices of the Shipley Stud sale the New Zealand-bred Levonia, dam of Mcrrivonia, was cabled as having brought MOOgns. This was an error. Tho mare was sold with a filly foal at foot by Comedy King for 140gn5.,. the buyer being the Fleming trainer, 0. T. Godby. Galoro was hurt whilo on the journey from Opaki to Trentham, and under tho oircumstiinces she did well to fill third place on 'Tuesday. TJp till' February 5, Messrs. T. H. Lowry and G. D. Greenwood can, if they wish, enter Desert Gold and Biplane for the Caulfield Futurity Stakes. The entry fee ' Those left in tho Middle Park Plate, to be run at the Mid-summer Meeting'.at Kiccartou, include Lonsr Range, Almoner, Cyrcsian, and Heathercote. Several North Island two-year-olds have been left in by an oversight. These include Karo and There was not a single dual winner at the Wellington meeting, but ltobur, Sweet Tipperary, Demos, Red Ribbon, Padding*' ton Green, Euripos,- and Wrestler were placed in two races. Two recent additions to the big team of Chokeboro Lodge are a sister to Toa Tore (Maniapoto-Gallantry) and a sister to Heathcrbrae (Treadmill-Bonnio Brae). H. Young and B. Dcelcy shared the riding' honours at the Wellington Meeting with throe wius each. S. Bagby was the only other horseman to score on mora than one occasion, the single winners being H. Gray, 0. Emerson, A. Reed, C. Reed, F. Ellis, J. O'Shea, and Berry. Kilboy, who has not raced in Australia since his arrival last spring, is now doing 'sufficiently well at Oiuilfield to suggest ho may get through a preparation. But as he progressed satisfactorily in the'spring until his trainer had to commence winding him up, it' may be wise on the part of thoso who fancy he may win the Australian Cup to wait until near the day before investing. Some of the mares at the Shipley Stud sale'went rather cheaply. Problem, by St. Hippo-EUerslie, tho dam of Solution, brought only 35gns., and Lady Lybia, by Antaeus-Lady Trenton, 15gne. Prior to leaving for Auckland on Wednesday. .T. O'Shea stated that in the Kelburn Plate Desert Gold went out with her usual brilliancy, but she took the tapes with her, and this pulled her up a bit. On getting clear he bad to ride her very hard, which accounted for her being unable to hold off 80-Pcep at the finish. Desert Gold, who will shorly arrive in Australia, has been nominated for the Newmarket Handicap and Australian Cup, but there is not much chance of the champion being seen in action in cither race. Reports from Flcmingtoii state that all is not .well with the English horse Lanius, and he is not likely to be a very formidable opponent to Desert Gold in the weht-for-uge events in Victoria nnd Sydney. • A southern writer states that 1. ?. Oninlivan will shortly take no the position of private trainer to Mrs. 3(. A. Perry', who intends racing horses on her own'account. , ~ . As far as can be gathered, there does not seem to bo much prospect of Mowno makine the trip to Flemiiigton and Randwick for the antumn meetings.
