Amsterdam, January 23. No'newspapers have arrived from Austria since January 18. Tho Vienna "Arbeiter Zeitung," in a remarkable article, says:—"lho patience of tho tortured masses is ended. They are unablo to endure any longer. Not only the workers, but millions of peasAnts, officials, and professional men demand peace. The strikers are now translating a powerless wish into a definite act." It is strango that the Austrian censor allowed tho article to bo published. The German newspapers are ignoring the Austrian crisis. A well-informed traveller from Austria states that every Austrian ridicules the idea of fighting on for Alsace-Lor-raine, for Germany's annexations in Belgium, for the freedom of the seas, and the other items in the, German Jingoes' programme. Austria wants an Austrian peace. An overwhelming mass of the people support tho right of self-determination. Germany does not want neace; but Austria does. Will she be offered it?-Aus.-N.Z. THE RETURN TO WORK TEMPER OF THE PEOPLE 'STILL VIOLENT. London, January 23. The "Daily Telegraph" Milan correspondent states that the Austrian strikes have collapsed, and work was resumed on Monday. Geneva messages only mention a collapse of the strike in Vienna, adding that the temper of the Austrian population remains violent. The German portions of Austria are reported to be comparatively calm, but Bohemia is in a state of ferment. A demonstration in the Prague Opera House on Sunday led to grave riots, and a general strike began in Prague on Monday. The "Arbeiter Zeitung" , warns the Government that if the Brest Litovsk negotiations fail owing to the uncompromising attitude'of the Central Powers, the Socialist leaders will m> longer he able to control the workers.—Aus.N.Z.
