TWO GIRLS DROWNED
BRAVE EFFORT TO SAVE A COMPANION. Sy Telograph—Press Association Wanganui, January 23. Whilo bathing in the Wanganui River, near Castlocliffi, this afternoon, two girls, Phyllis Walker, sixteen years of age, and Ida Becker, ten years, were drowned. Phyllis Walker could not swim and got out of her_ depth, and Ida Becker, who could swim a little, tried to save her, but the girls eank together. Three young girl companions could not rondnr any assistance but ran screaming for help. A number of men working in the locality went to tho scene, but the spot where the girls disappeared could not bo definitely located. Dragging operations .were carried on for about an hour, and both bodies were recovered from a deep hole, where there was over ten feet of water. .Artificial respiration was tried unsuccessfully.
Ida Becker was an only child,
