SUMMER RACES AT TRENTHAM
NOBLEMAN WINS THE CUP ■Wrestlek scores in the telegraph .'• / ' " '■ ■■ ; STAKES WON BY FINMARK. Heavy rain fell.at Trentham on Saturday when the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Sleeting opened, but though it attected the attendance somewhat u ma.terially assisted. to improve the going. ■ The visiting spoytsmeii included prominent, owners from all parts of the Dominion, and the racing was of the high order usually seen' at Trentham./ .Nobleman, the favourite for tho Wellington Cup, won the race from end to end. He stripped ■very fit, and bis owner and trainer made no seoret of the fact that they fully expected him to win. 'As at Awapuni he was in the forefront tho wholo way, and won like a, good horse. In previous years the of tho Manawatu. Oup on Boxing Day has often proved a good line for the. Wellington ' Cup, and this year history repeated itself.
Prior, to..the start of tho Trial Stakes something wont, wrong with the totalisator, bift the electrician in chargo soon had tho righted and little tiino was lost. iTfie totalisator staff.was -kept -bußy during .the day, and-tho sum of £45,169 10s. was ■invested. On tho opening day last year the. amount dealt' with was £42,198 10s. Secjetary A. E. Whyto and his first lieutenant Jlr. J. Griffiths, had everything in working order, and the day's sport passed' oil /Without delays or a hitch of any kind. linaribbon was the only withdrawal from |the Apprentices' Handicap, one mile. It l.was a good betting event, Momac and Missouri being tho favourites. At..the start ''Matilda, Vascovia, and Pervolo led off with atomao handy. Rounding tho bend the ifleld strung out, and Pervolo led into the 'straight, while Matilda- dropped back. Entering upon the last quarter Anhia was coming fast on the outside, but she covered a lot of unnecessary ground. Pervolo and Battle Song wore prominent at the 'distance, but over tho last bit Vascovia finished the beat and won by a bare length from Pervolo, who was a head in •front of Battle Song. Momac was closo M> fourth. The two.year-old field contained a lot ,of gobd-looking horses. Killowen was a hot favourite, and jumping out smartly he never looked like getting beaten. As they oame on to the course proper.Cherry Mart, Heathercote, and Oyresian were prominent behind the favourite, but the former soon fell back. > Cyresian settled Heathercote, but had to be kicked out to stall of! Eleus, who finished fast. Heathercote •was-fourth and Rebekah next. There was a long delay at the barrier, but the start appeared to be a good one. • Silver Tongue and Gold Soult each car, ried over four-figures in the Anniversary Welter Handicap, but they and the ton•weighta all ran badly. At the start Pronation led Prince Delaware and Mascot. (Across the bottom the field strung out ■with Silver Tongue whipping the field. Entering the straight, Glenroy took charge afid won easily from Probation, who beat. Sweet Tipperary by a head. Mascot was the same distance away, and Bonny Maid Ayah was* "the goods" in the Trial Plate, ■hut she failed badly at tho finish after being well placed' for six furlongs. After the start, Bagdad Quickly rushed to the front, and, followed by Paddragton Green and Ajah, he led into the straight. Nothing oould extend the Hymettue geld ng and he reached the post full of running fthree lengths ahead of Paddington Green. EurJpi'S was c)o> up, and then camo Thames and the favourite. The winner ■was sold at tho Kararau sale and fetched s%ns. This is his first win for-his new owner. He is also the first winner trained foy S. Waddell since the latter hw been acting as a free lance. Vagabond and Multicipal were the televenth-hour withdrawals from, the Oup. Nobleman retained .his position of favourite, but he was closely pressed by Red Bibbon, who carried over four figures. [At the barrier Teka was on the ineide ■with Nobleman next, and then camo Johnny Walker and Chortle, with Multiply in the middle and Red Eibbon on the outside. The Btart was a. good one, Miss do Val and Nobleman being the first to Bingle themselves out. At the stand Nobleman led Missde Val,-who was at tho head of a hunched field. Going out of the straight Adjutant moved lip .to Nobleman, and at the mile the pair were showing the way to Alteration, with the others Jmnched. At the five furlongs Chortle and ■Itultioly moved up on the outside. Passing the half mile Nobleman had charge from Adjutant with Square Heal and Johnny Walker-next. Entering the straight Nobleman still led, but the positions of : the others were undergoing a change. Bed Ribbon,! in the middle, dashed out, tut could not reach tho leader, who von by a length. Miss de Val came from a ■ long way back and got third place, fcl- i lowed by Adjutant and Johnny Wuliw. . Chortle and Teka were tho last to Er.ish. i Multiply did not get a good iun and : ■was very wido out at the turn. Adjutant • arid Johnny Walker both ehaped well, and i bo did Miss de Val, who had nothine behind hci" at the half mile. Square Deal < did not see out the distance, and Chortle,' , . after showing plenty of paoe, failed to see if out. The winner is owned by.a popular Bulls sportsman, Mr. W. J. Phillips, and ' IB trained by J. Coyle. The victory was a popular one, and.the crowd gave the winner a good reception on returning to tho ' scale.
Hymeetra pulled up lame after a gallop in the morning, and he was withdrawn on the course for the Wellington Stages. 'Almoner, 80-Peep, and Demagogue was the order of favouritism. The last-named got a' moving start, and with Demos led into the straight. The Foal Stakes wii ner was soon in trouble, and Demos Icrked like winning, but Pinmark finished very strongly and comfortably defeated Demos at the finish. Chimera ran a good Utce in third place. The winner has been crneistent, but, unlucky, all through the ik-a-eon, and on' Saturday he got in at weight-tor-age, while the other two-year-olds, with the exception of Demos. hadV earned full penalties., ..Hβ is a full-brother to Estland, the dual Derby winner. • An outsider in Post Haste, a 'well-bred
reject from the Chpkcboro stables, had a very easy win iu the Ruapehu Handicap. Tlio winner was soon in chargo itnii won pulling up by three lengths ficm linaribbon, who just beat liobur. The Hidwill owned pair Consultation and jUtocintion were next. Tho winner lma fliowii a lot of pace in his races, hut he has In the past always failed to leave the luark With hia field. Ayah and Bagdad, who had raced cm Her in the dny, were tho defections from ths Telegraph Handicap. The consistent Nannft was a good favourite, but this time she met moro than her match and waß one of the last to finish. At the starling jioet Egypt drew tho rails, and Wroetlor was next. The favourite wan in the middle of tho field, aW Nystad and Parisian Eiaraond were on tho outside. Lady General delayed the start for some time. When the barrier waa skied Ranna took some time to get to the front, but as they turned on to the course proper she was showing the way to TVnimatao and Wrestler. Tlie Ohokcbore colt ran to the, favourite two fiirlonra from hnmo, and she then flopped quickly. In tho run to the poet Wrestler beat Waimatao, with Crowhurst oloso up, and then came Lady Black and Koesian, who were together.
