WELLINGTON NORTH
Sir,—lt is generally understood theti when the National Government was formed a compact was entered into uinii the party holding a seat becoming vacant should havo the nomination or a successor. In fact, this understanding has been exemplified by what happened at Pahiatua and Hawko's Bay. Yet what do we find happening with regard to '.lie North electorate before even a vacancy has occurred r fionie who, opposed to the party aold-' ing the seat, sire by intrigue and submarine methods starting a campaign of calumny and abuse that one- would have thought would have been absent at this time, when the peoplo are so preoccupied with the great struggle for our freedom on the other side of the world. TI-β name of Mr. J. P. Luke, our respected Mayor, has been mentioned as a probable candidate, and iii would he hard at this juncture to find in Wellington anyone with a more worthy public iecord (especially so dur. ing the war period) to represent a portion of the city in Parliament; yet we read in the daily Press attempts to vilify and calumniate him. Surely, sir, this'is a poor return to our Mayor and Mayoress for all the strenuous and pood work they have done and are still doing to the honour of this city, and I am certain that should Mr. Luke he tho National Government nominee the electors will show their appreciation of a man who has done so much for us and ours.—l am, etc., ELECTOR, WELLINGTON NORTH,
