AN EXCITING JOURNEY
EXPERIENCES OF MOTORISTS. A party of motorists—seven ladies and three gentlemen—had an unenviable experience whilst motoring from Auckland to Gisborne last week. Soon after leaving Opotiki a violent thunderstorm came on, accompanied by heavy rain, which made the road on tho 'unmetalled portion very greasy. The cars, being heavy ones, skidded about a lot, despite the use of chains, and required very skilful handling. One of tho lady passengers decided to walk, and her husband remained witn her. Thosn m tho cars did not reach Motii until betire.m 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. An endeavour to procure a buggy that night to go back and pick up the pedestrians failed, and the lady and gentleman spent the mgw on the road walking towards Motu, expecting- every minute to meet, the buggy, aud afraid to go off the road in "case they missed it. Mrft on Sunday morning a vehicle left Motu, and also' one of the cars. The cat reached tho travellers first, and was returning to Motu when misfortune ngain overtook tho party,. In order to avoid a head-on collision with another car in a narrow part the Auckland car was run right into the bank, a bent axle and lamps broken being the result. Although the cars hit one another, no damage was done. The buggy arriving on tho scene, tho party returned to Motu, which was reached shortly boforo noon.
