BOWLING
DOMINION TOURNAMENT THE PAIRS AND RINKS By Telegraph—Press Association. Dlinedin, January 20. The Dominion Bowling Tournament was continued on the Dunedin Green on Saturday, when the finals of the pairs and rinks competitions wei;o reached. Rain in the early morning made the green rather heavy, and a shower was also experienced during the progress of play in the afternoon. Tho unfinished pairs game between Woolf (United) and Parsons (Ponsonby) wae completed, the former miming by 26 to 15. The semi-final between Parsons and Brown (United) was won by tho Ponsonby pair by 22 to 17. It was left to Parsons to meet Harraway (Duncdin) in the final, and an interesting game resulted, the finish being played in tho fast fading light. At the tenth head Harraivay led, 13—8, but Parsons scored ihreo and four on the_ eighteenth and nineteenth heads, giving him a lead of 19 to 18. Harra•way, however, came again, and irith two and one en tho last two heads won by 21 to 19.
Thu rinks final between 0. It.. Smith (Otago) and Parsons (Ponsonby) was only a fair game, the Ponsonby players not being up to tho form previously shown. On the fifth head Smith was leading, 6—3, which' he increased three heads later to 9—l; but a couple of threes to Parsons reversed tho position, and the score read 10 to 9 in his favour. At the fourteonth head Smith was eight <up, a.iid tho position was unchanged, with three heads to go. Three to Ponsonby {(avo them an outside ohance, but two to Otago on the twentieth head put the game beyond doubt; Parsons requiring eight to win with one head to go. Ho scored two, and the game ceded: Smith 23, Ponsonby 18.
In the play-off for third plnce in the rinks, Maxwell Walker (Ponsonby) beat Smellio (Green leland) by 24 to 20.
Sir James Allen presented the banner to the winning team, tho plnpper of which this year is the president of the association. Mr. Smith, in returning thanks, expressed sprcial pride because this was the first occasion the banner had been won by a South Island teain. Mr. Maxwell , Walker said ho thought the time had come for tho standardisation of tourneys, so that conditions at the com< petitions would be the same in each centre. The Dunedin arrangements, with slight amendments., might be advantageously followed by other centres.
