GIFTED WORKHOUSE GIRL
PROMISING CHILD VOCALIST FOR CONCERT PLATFORM. The recent discovery 'at the- Epsom Workhouso of a talented girl vocalistAlice Mcars, aged 15—has been followed by a decision on the part of th« Guardians to give the child every opportunity of developing hw gift (states the "Daily News"). "Our idea," said the master, "is the concert platform, and if with proper training her voice develops in the way we anticipate, she is going to have as a chance as if she had been born in a far different sphere." Alice Mears is a pleasant little girl,with rosy cheeks. Asked what it was she sang that attracted so much attention at the Harvest Festival,, she replied, "It was the solo in the anthem, 'While the Earth Remaineth.'" The master was very enthusiastic over the child's gifts. "Her lower notes are as mellow as a blackbird's," he said.
There was a large attendance of soldiers at the danco which was given for their benefit by the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. 'Luke) and their Entertainment Committee in the Town Hall on Saturday evening. As usual, very satisfactory arrangements were made to ensure the enjoyment of the guests and the touch or keenness in the air that made itself quickly evi-_ dent after the extreme heat of the past few days gave an added zest to their energies. On this occasion the music for dancing was provided by Mr. King's Band, and was much enjoyed. The supper arrangements were* carried out by the Entertainment Committee, who had a busy time attending to the needs of all present. The Mayor and Mayoress both attended the dance, and welcomed the soldiers.
Mrs. Amy Pomeroy lias been awarded the honour of membership of the British Empire Order .for the remarkable courage and devotion shown by her in helping her husband to invent a bullet which has, it is plaimed, put an end to the Zeppelin menace. Mrs. Pomeroy is years of age, and though she is the mother of four children, she risked her life all day and all night long.
