The strict enforcement of the blockade is affecting the Germans' stomachs and nerves. They will, therefore, shortly mako a last desperate effort. The Allies' military leaders believe they will strike at the French British, and Italian fronts, and will utilise all their .submarines. They veil, sond cruiser U-boats to American, waters, and will use deadlier gasos ami bigger guns. WHOLESALE DISAFFECTION IN AUSTROGERMAN ARMIES DESERTIONS BY THE THOUSAND. (Rec. January 20, 5.5 p.m.) New York, January IS. The United \Press correspondent at Petrograd states that wholesale disaffections are spreading in tho AustroGerman armies. Entire Austrian companies have been shot for sympathising with Russian Socialism. Twenty-five thousand armed Germans have joined the fast-growing number of deserters. Von Hindenbiirg is strenuously endeavouring to put down, insubordination, and recentlv ordered a thousand to be shot for refusing to obey their officers, —Aus.-N.Z. The "Neiuo Freie Presse" states thai a strike movement is general through' out Lower Austria, Trieste, and. the Trieste Valley, and all the war industries in Vienna.There are ten thousand strikers ai the Wienerneustadt locomotive anc nmnition factories, and the R-oeth aeroplane works at Lichtenroeth are closed, Paris, January 19. The "Matin" states that the metal and transport workers form the principal body of strikers. There was ver.y serious rioting at Vienna, Grata, and Salzburg. Over eighty stores, food and clothing shops, and several restaurants in Vienna were pillaged. The police intervened, and many-on both sides tvere injured. Tho garrison refused to march against the strikers. Tho whole of Bohemia is in a state- of commotion. Soldiers fired on the rioters at Prague and Pilsen. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
