Sir James Allen, Minister of Derence, is at present in the south. Ho will return to Wellington to-morrow or on Wednesday. ■ The Hon. G. W. Russell arrived at Wellington by the ferry steamer yesterday morning. Colonel A. Hume, who has been ill for tho past fortnight, is now very much bettor. Colonel Campbell was a passenger from Dunediu b) the ferry steamer yesterday. The death is announced of Mr. Thomas Gore Graham, ajiother of New Zealand's pioneer sottlers. Tho late Mr. Gore Graliam was born at Newnliam, Gloucester, in 1829, and cj.mcto New Zealand in 1863 in the ship Hanover. Shortly afterwards he accepted an appointment on the Mission station, at Poverty Bay (under Bishop Williams), where his eldest sou was born, and he left there shortly before the now historical massacre. He then joined the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at Auckland, and as an officer of this bank served at New Plymouth, Wanganui, and Wellington. Having resigned from the bank he joined as paymaster the firm of Messrs. Bregden," the contractors of the early New Zealand railways, and he Tiad many interesting stories to tell of those Jays in his travels up and down the new Jines in various parts of the colony. Later he became accountant to the New Zealand Drug Company in Wellington, with whom he served for 2o years, during 'which lime he was a well-known resident of tho Hutt Valley. Some fifteen years ago ho settled in Palmerston, and to within a week of his donth was keenly interested in all the great questions of the day, and sought his paper keenly each day for the latest news of the war. He leaves a widow, two sons, and three (laughters, and seventeen grandchildren, and one areat-grand-son. The oldest grandchild has been killed on active service., and another is at the front. Messrs. Walter and Percy Graham are the sons, nnA :he daughtors are Mrs. Harris, Wellington, Mrs. Groves, Ekctahuna, and Mrs. Cook, Petone. Mr. R. W. ShnlJcrass returned to AYellington yesterday from Dunedin. Mr. James Jordan, Clerk of Courts at Nnpier, succeeds Mr. Terry at New Plymouth. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper, of Majoribanks ijtreet, have been advised that their son, Second Lieutenant L. F. Cooper, is returning home, and will arrive early next month.
Mr. R. G. Thomas. Registrar of the Supreme Court, Auckland, who has been confined to his home by illness since November, is now making favourable progress towards a recovery. He lias been granted six months' leave of absence. Mr. Thomas was formerly Deputv-Hegistrar of the Supreme Court, Wellington.
