GENERAL FARMING NOTES
It is reported that there will 1)0 a shortage of locally-grown chaff ill the Gisborno district this season. A farmer in the Puha district lias been offeree] £10 per aero for ton acres of oats in the ear. The showers of tlio past week or so liavo had a most refreshing elfect on vegetation, and have resulted in minimising the ravages of blight and other vegetable pests (says tlio "Manawatu Standard"). * The sale is reported of the well known Ascot Estate, Mangere, leased until recently by Mr. Hugh 11. M'Kcnzio, tho wcil-known blood stock breeder. Tho property has been purchased by Mr. M. Harris, a southern gentleman. The price, realised is in tlio vicinity of £40,000, reports the "Manawatu Standard." The crops at Nireaha aro reported to be very light this year. Capo weed has taken the place of clover. Flic's are playing havoc with the turnip crops, and in many cases the turnip seed will have to be resown. A sample of the new lluakitra oat was on the market in Oiiniaru this week. It yielded at the rate of fifty bushels per acre.
Mr. Alexander Seott, inspector for the National Mortgage and Agency Company, who has just completed a fairly comprehensive tour of Canterbury, says that never in his twentyfive years' experience of the district lias he seen tlie crops looking better than they do this season. He was struck with the greatly-increased area sown in wheat, and by the fine appearance of all root crops.
