WEIGHT OF GRAIN
REQUEST TO TFTE V, AILAVAY a DEPARTMENT. Tho North Island and South Island Grain Merchants' Association, which is meeting; in Wellington, yesterday discussed the question of chccking the weight of grain on the railway, as shown bv the Department's weighbridges. The general manager (Mr. J!v. H. Hiley) was invited to attend, awl in his unavoidable absence Mr. R. " • M'Villy (assistant general manager) was present. The position put forward was that the association urged the Department no longer to rake up position that the weights are purely for railway purposes, but that they should ic available for all purposes,'and to that end the Department should do something to make thom moro accurate. For that purpose the work shoiild- .be entrusted to employees of a higliei (ri'ade than are. at present engaged upon it. I? such a step necessitated extra cost, the merchants would gladIv pav it, because their idea was to be able to use the Departments figures as the basis between the merchant and the grower. Another reque.->t in the same connection was that, more care should be taken in ascertaining, tile, tare of the trucks, and that while a truck is being unloaded the chains and eouolitig-s be unhooked and the trucks stand by themselves instead of being joined on to others. . Mr. M'Villy promised to place the various points before the general manager for consideration.
