MEAT PRICES
FOOD CONTROLLER'S OPERATIONS IN ENGLAND. From time to time recently cablegrams itavo been published regarding the iixing of prices of New Zealand and other meat offered for Hale in the United Kingdom. There was some doubt as to whether the restrictions applied to Argentine meat, and Mr. Massey lately sent a telegram to the Kigh Commissioner asking him to mako inquiries. Sir Thomas Mackenzie's reply, which has just come to hand, is as follows:— "With reference to your telegram of January 9, tho fixing of retail prices applies equally to Now Zealand and Argentina meat. Maximum wholesalo prices have been fixed for all meats, difference being made between homekilled and imported. Irrespective of maximum wholesale prices, rotail prices must bo based on actual wholesale cost, retailers being limited to a profit of 2Jd. per pound, or twenty per cent., whichever is the less."
