NOTES AND COMMENTS
fBY GLEMCOE.I
TRACK WORK AT TRENTHAM. At 'I'rcntliam yesterday the weather was fine but dull. There was a good muster to see the training work, and the inner grass and tan tracks were open. H. Cutts opened proceedings at 4.30 a.m. by sending Wrestler seven furlongs. Antagonist's son went very fast over the first half mile, but was then ste.adied. He bears a solid appearance and good judges predict he will be on hand'at the finish of ihe Telegraph Handicap on Saturday.' The Cup candidates. Devotion (L. Jfanson), and Adjutant (A. Eecd) were tried out ou the tan. They ran one mile and a quarter in Zmin. 20sec., with tho maro much the better. Adjutant waa in one of his sour moods, and Devotion had to be steadied several times to keep back with' him. ! Thoughtful (E. Hatch) sprinted down tho straight and a similar task was allotted Ayah (A. Beed). • .. . Mr.. W. K. Herbert's two-year-olds Bol'eep. Active, and Cotillion were galloped a half mile on the grass. Active was first away, but the Welcome Stakes winner soon ■overhauled him, and won easily at the finish in 492-ssoc. The effort of the winner was a good one. Johnny Walker and Menckus went ten furlongs together. They began slowly, but iirarmod up over the last half mile and finished up the distance in 2min. 163-sscc. Menelaus seemed to be going Setter than .Tntmny Walker at any stage of the journey. . . .
Occasion, who is improving, had Risingham doing hid best at the cud of half a milo, which took 52eec. Matilda was going as well as Maecot at tho end of seven furlongs, run in linin. 32seo. ■ Probation, n good track worker at any time, had no difficulty in shaking off Association, in a bout over five furlongs. Miss do Val (T.. Young) hopped off at tho mile post on tho tan and was picked up by Pervolo and Prince Delaware at tho- six furlongs. The mare had no difficulty in. catching and beating her' ophonents, and led by several lengths at tho ond>of a mile, which took lmin. 46scc. Tho mare docs not begin as brilliantly as was her wont last season, hilt there was no mistake about the wny she finished her task. The ealt-water treatment at Petone has evidently benefited her considerably. The Porirua hacks, Eocksalt, Rajnnl, and I'.lighty were galloped' six furlongs together. Tho time was lniin. 20aeci. A. Horo's t«ani, Pariform, Imaribbon, and (Bezonian—Snowshell) were given eney work. The last-named haß a, very ■ taking appearance, and was much admired. Shs doca not look rcsdy, ■ but -.vonl'l ?o i very mervy half mile. Gold Roult was 100 gaod f - ir The Golfer over soyen furlongs in lmin. 33sec J. H.' Prosser,' who ia usually one of the early birds, was. last to work yesterday. Tho trouble was the shortage of riders. Only A. ' Hoed, 0. l\eed, and Hi Hatch wore available of the regulars. The coursn ia in oplcndid condition, and the recent rains hs.V? left the tracke and iavm with a nice freeh" appeo, rance: Owiicrs should nob overlook the closing ot acceptances for. the Pahiatua Meeting. T.ii-K" are <lue. on Jlouriay next. On Saturday trains will leave Lf.mbton for Trentham at 7.8 a.m., 8.30 a.m., and ?.15 a.m.:.
"The names of Aflhley. lieed, the .Trcnthiim liglit-weight jockey, and J. Decry, tho well-known cross-countvy rider, are included in the ballot publiplied '.his morning.- .- . ■ • Mr. It. W. Short, secretary of the Wellington Trotting Club, has arranged for a continuous motor bus service on Monday next. The buees will run from 9 a.m., and the faro to the Ilutt Park is Is. 6d. The death took place in November of the English trainer George Clement, at an advanced age. He trained Eosebery, who in 1876 won the double, Ceearewitch and Cambridgeshire .The story -.of Rosebery being touted on behalf of certain bookmakers has been told, but (says London "Sportsman") will bear repetition, as showing the natural shrewdness, of the trainer. -Whon he noticed the close attention naid by a stranger to his horees he se.t himpelf to put him off the scent, and ordered the boy who usually took letters to the post to use Hoeebery as a hack for that purpose. Being averykind, handv horse,.there, was no danger in doing this., but it had the effect of sendins the tout back to his employers with the story that the horse was no good, "for they-used him to go to the poet," . .
