MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A STOLEN BARREL OF BEER. Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., was on the bench at the Magistrate's ■ Court yesterday, and dealt with tho following cases:— Percy Hammond pleaded ■ guilty to stealing a barrel containing fivo gallons of beer, the property of J. Staples and Co., Ltd. According to Inspector Marsack, the man was seen on Sunday afternoon' trundling the barrel, which was taken from the yard of Staples and Co., Ltd., up Molesworth Street, and was arrested. He asked for a remand for a week for further inquiries to be made. ■ The remand was granted.

Samuel Sparks, for being found drunk, was fined 205., in default fortyeight hours'' imprisonment, and for damaging a policeman's helmet valued at 11s. Gd. ho -was fined 40s. and ordered to, pay the damage, tho alternative being fourteen days' imprisonment.. • 'For "insobriety Samuel Costain wtts fined £3, with 'the option, of serving fourteen days in gaol. Three first offenders were.fined lOs. each, with the alternative of- twenty-four hours' imprisonment, one was fined 205., in default forty-eight hours'/ imprisonment, and two soldiers wore- ordered to ho handed over to the military authorities.

MAINTENANX'E CASES. Frederick Bkekledgc, for disobeying a maintenance order, tho arrears amounting to £140 13a. 0(1., was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, warrant not in issue so long as he. pays £1 a week, first payment to bo made, on February 1. Frank Hollowny, who was in ,_ arrears with bis maintenance to "tho amount of £26 fis., was senleiiecd to three months' imprisonment, no warrant to issue so long as £1 a week is paid as from February 1. Mr. V. JJ. Willis appeared for romplninunl. . Hannah I?nrcell proi'ecflcd iißainst Thomas Pnrccll for separation, maintenance, and guardianship of three children. After hearing the ovidenco of tho complainant and her sou. the Magistrate granted a- separation order. Maintenance wim lixod at Ms. per week, and Mrs. Pnrccll was given the guardiansbip of the children. Mr. 11. F. O'Leary appeared for complainant.
