The Kemiedy should arrive here on I'riday \ morning from Foxton to go on the slip for cleaning and painting. If the Kennedy keeps to her time-table the Kaitoa, will not be taken> up for cleaning until Friday week. The Amokura will sail from Wellington on Friday for Auckland to attend the regatta, which is to be held on Monday, January 28, instead of on the following day—Anniversary Day. Since the Wanganu'i Harbour Board's new slip was opened on September 20, 1917 four vessels have been taken up for overhaul. Tho. first craft to be hauled up on the ways was the hulk which does duty at Wanganui. The innovation has proved a complete success, and has supplied a longfelt want. It was primarily constructed to aocoiumodate the two freezing companies' lighters, and thus save the expense of sending the veseels to Wellington. The bud has also been tho means of bringing revenue to the port which otherwise was going elsewhere. Another gain is repair work, which also had to he done at other ports. So successful has the venture proved that it is understood that it is contemplated enlarging the slip to such an extent that it will be capable of taking the largest regular coastal traders which come to Wanganui.. At tho last meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board, the Harbourmaster, Captain l>. M'lntyre, reported: "I obtained soundings at the entrance four times durJ?t month, on the 6th, 18th, 19th, and 28th. On the latter date, I am' pleased to bo able to report a (substantial increase of 2ft. Sin. in depth since my previous report, and the depth is now and 16ft. 6in. at high water neaps. We have had two or three hard westerly blows this month, and after each blow I have had an increase in depth/which clearly shows that the westerly sea stirs up and ecours out the sand, and loaves a good channel. I'or the last two and a half pars we havo had praotioally nothing but easterly winds and flno weather conBcquontly little or no scour takes place under such conditions. In tho river channel tho minimum depth is still 13ft. 6in. at wntr W n a capsT in?S, and 10 "' 6in ' at h * h The Putiki could not nail for southern ports last night, as her complement of nremen was not complete. i; The Baden Powell has been delayed a day at J>c\v Plymouth, and in conncQiienco is not due here until to-morrow morning. She will sail at 5 p.m. for Wanganui and Now Plymouth. The Union Company advise that on account of having been delayed at Auckland thn Monowiii will not sail from Wellington until Saturday, and then she will not call at Lyttelton, but sail direct for Dunedin.
