MARK TWAIN
A RECITAL.. At the Y.M.0.A.. last 'evening Professor Thomas.C. Trueblpod, ( Professor .of Oratory in the University, of Michigan, U.S.A., gave a. "Mark Twain" recital. The assembly hall ivas filled and. the professor was accorded an' enthusiastic. hearing. / Before reciting pieces from the Works of the..great American humorist, ' Professor Trueblood made brief reference to Mark Twain himself. He reminded the'audience of the excellent story of the reported death of Mark .Tnain. When the announcement was published pressmen went to the hotel ■vvhero the humorist had been living, rind while they were waiting there in ■walked Mark Twain, with ono of the newspapers in his hand. He remarked that' the report of his death had teen grossly exaggerated. The professor went on to say that while we ijja doften laughed ourselves sick at Mark Twain, the same writer had in some of his works reached great heights of--pathos.~ Mark Twain also' was a,- man who was admired for his integrity. When his publishers went 'bankrupt, he tomed the world lecturing to raise money to get them out of debt. Mark Twain's works were widely published in America, and, moreover, had been published in all the civilised languages. •■ Professor.Trueblood read selections from five of Mark Twain's hooks. The audience'listened with the keenest attention, an-warmly applauded at the conclusion of the recital. ■■
