THREATENED GERMAN BLOW
GREAT OFFENSIVE IN PREPARATION
VERDUN, CALAIS AND ITALY
By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright (See. January 15, 0.15 a.m.) Paris, January 14. A well-known neutral, just arrive d f rom Berlin, states that a great German offensive has been decided upon, directly the weather conditions allow. The main blow will bo aimed a t Verdun, with secondary offensives against Calais and Italy. The &w n p r in C 0 and Von Ludendorif have regained nil their old influence. Vo n Ludendorff is of opinion that there are three out of four chances that the coming offensive, will be successful. Other generals point out that the last effort at Verdun failed owing to the mud. This time they will be careful to choose a favourable season; Apart from the great army entri s ted with tho offensive, twenty divisions will bo held in reserve, to be Used in the last extremity, as the morale is poor. The neutral adds:— "Although tho German machine is as powerful as ever, it is likely to collapse at the first military failure. Then the masses of pacifists in the Army and the civilians will bring the responsible parties to account."—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
