Another vessel which was held up by the. rain on flatur--1 day was the Putiki. She will sail to-day , for Timaru, and Dunedin,

MOVEMENTS OF COLLIERS, j'l'hc Union Company's Kini and Kowhai and the Blackball collier Ngahere left Grcymouth late on Saturday night, fully lndeu, for Wellington. The Komnta, which has been laid up in Wellington for Boiue time, was on Batur. day recommissioned, and will sail for Wcstport at 10 a.m. to-day. Who will load coal for Auckland. ~ . The Kamo, whioh has also been laid up in Wellington, will leave at noon to-day for Groymouth to load coal for Wellington. The Kokiri and Kahika will leave Wellington to-night for Westport, where they will again load for this port. The Anchor Company's Waimca Till sail to-night with cargo for Nelson, Wcstport, Grcymouth, mid Hokitika. The John is due this morning direct from Oamaru, and if she makes an early arrival she will Bail this evening for Wanganui. Should she not get away to-night fihe will sail to-morrow, returning to this port to load for Duncdin and Timaru. Owing to the Ripple making a special trip from Napier to Gisborne, she will not arrive in Wellington till Wednesday morning. All shippers, therefore, arc asked not to send any cargo to the Ripple before Wednesday, and she will then take only Napier and Coast cargo, and no oargo for Gisborne. She rvill load for Akitio, Napier, and Giflborne the following week. The Wellington Steamship Company will dispatch the Baden Powell for Wanganui and New Plymouth to-morrow afternoon. Early this morning the Rosamond is due direct from Gisborne. Oargo for Bluff and Dunedin will be loaded hero, and she is to sail in the evening. The vossel will return to Gisborne, via Wellington and Napier. v Tho Ngatoro returned to Grcymouth on Saturday afternoon to load a. full cargo of coal for Wellington. She Is due here on Thursday. The Defender is to sail this afternoon with general cargo for Picton. Greytuoutli, and Hokitika. The Corinno left Oamaru at midnight ?.? m nday for Tini'iT". Lyttelton, and Wellington, fihe Is due here to-morrow morning and after loading tos;n cargo will Bail for Nelson and New Plymouth. The black can buoy marking Hikuta Rock Tokomaru Bay. has broken adrift, and It will be replaced as soon as possible. It will probably occupy ten or fourteen days, however, in replacing the buoy. The Hinemoa finished landing stores at East Cape on Friday, and Bailed for Cuvier Island. She is due to leave Auckland on Wednesday evening for the northern and West Coast lightß, Mr. Britton, steward on the Waimea, was admitted to the'Westport Hospital on Thursday night, suffering from a fractured right thigh. While the Waimea was on tho voyage from Greymouth to Now Plymouth, Mr.- Britton fell while going downstairs with tho tea. and sustained the injury. Captain Graham put into Westport and sent him' to the hospital for treatment. The pilot (Captain Tinney) reported to a mooting of the Patea Board recently that the channel at the entrance is crooked and shallow between the ends of tho walla, where there is a bank in the centre of tho entrance, making it bad for shipping at neap tides. The bank should scour out with a good spring tide. Captain Tinney stated that he sounded the bar on January 5, and got 7ft. 6in. close to tho western wall, with 7ft. on the tide gauge. The channel, however, is very narrow, but with good water along the eastern wall when once over the spit. There were 18 arri- - vals and 17 departures since the December report. • Writing to the Christehurch "PreES," a correspondent saj-B:—I noted with interest your remarks about the old composite vossel Thermopylae and the Cutty Sark, and I have no hesitation in 6aying that the former vessel could beat the latter hands 'down in almost any kind ot a breeze. I have sailed in both, so lam in a position to know. The last time I saw the Thermopylae was 1897 at Pnget Sound. She' was then engaged in the lumber trade, having been reduced to a haiqne with ports knocked in her bows for tho reception of lumber. Whilst on the subject of fast clippers it would be interesting to know what became of the other one of ' the famous'trio, viz., the Romanoff, for if you cave to ask any old shellback to name the three fastest vessels of the eighties ho would name them the Romanoff, Cutty Sark, and the Thermopylae. Then there were the Samuel Plimsoll,, Patriarch Pericles, and a host of othei'B of .Aberdeen liners, to. say nothing of the Waimate. of the New Zealand Shipping Company, all of which in a stiff breeze could more- than hold their own with anything on the water. The fact if the matter is. tho test of a shin was its ability to sail in light winds when the big iron .tanks of latter days would bo floundering about practically helpless. b«t capahlc of being driven through a howling gale'of wind at a furious speed with all sail set. when the smaller clipper would be obliged to heavo to. Wessrs. M'Arthur. Jeffries, and Co.. Ltd., will to ; day dispatch the Orcpuki for T.vttelton with general cargo, which she will receive until 3 p.m. The Karu will s;u! to-night for Tarakohe and Takaka, also receiving cargo until 3 p.m. Mr. Eckford's Wairau arrived at Wellington yesterday after having been 'aid up at Blenheim for some months. fi!r> will sail to-morrow for Blenheim, and wiU be regularly engaged with the Opawa in trading to Blenheim. The Htiia is due to-morrow from New j Plymouth, and will sail on Wednesday at 5 p.m. for Blenheim.
