The death took place last Thursday at her residence, Napier, ►of Mrs. D, K. Knowles, one of the last of the Hnwke's Bav band of pioneer settlers and relict of the late Mr. E. AV. Knowles. The late Mrs: Knowles, who was'B6 years of age, was horn at Islington, London, where her father, Dr. J. J. Brown, had a practice, and sho spent a'part of her life in the Scilly Isles. She came to Hawko's Bay in 1860 ,and had lived there ever since.
Mr. J. M. Coradine (Mayor of Masterton) and Mrs. Coradine returned to the Wairarnpa lust week from n visit to the Waikato and Fox ton. Major and Mrs. Wallingford (Auckland) are visiting Christchurch. Lady AYard is staying with her daughter, Mrs. Bernard B. 'Wood, Christchurch. 'Die Danncvirke "News" states that advice has been recoived that Mrs. Fanua Gurr, wife of Mr. E. W. Gurr, of Samoa, brother of Mr. N. L. Gurr, of Danne virke, died on December 16, at Samoa, from ptomaine poisoning, brought about by eating fish. The deceased lady was the mother of Mr. Stanley Bernard Gurr, a relumed soldier, who was . wounded on Gallipoli, and who is well known in Dannevirke. The return of Mr. and Mrs. T. Watson to Oamaru marks the accomplishment of two years' war service well rendered (says'the "Mail"). Mr. and Mrs. Watson left Oamaru two years ago, with the intention of performing whatever duties they could find to do to help win the war in England. Mr. Watson secured employment in the Nowbury munition works, and was of such service that when ho left he was in charge of 150 workers. Mrs. Watson devoted her time to hospital work. Both have had exciting experiences of air raids.
