SOLDIER INJURED
' CRUSHED BETWEEN STEAMER . . AND WHARF. The dangerous practice of not waiting for the gangway of a steamer before landing caused a serious accident at the Ferry Wharf at 6 o'clock yesterday afternoon. As the harbour steamer Duchess, a crowded'ship, was berthing, a soldier, Private Coventry (38), of C Company, Thirty-fifth Reinforcements:' attempted to climb from the lower deck of the steamer to the wharf before the gangway had been placed in position. A' constable was warning the passengers to wait for the gangway, and it is ■understood that Coventry, heeding the warning, tried to step back to the steamer and in doing so fell between the ship and wharf,, and was crushed in the chest. His ribs were seriously injured, and his removal to Victoria Military Hospital was ordered.
