YESTERDAY'S PROCEEDINGS,
Mr. S.' E: : M'Carthy, S.M., was on the. Bench at. the Magistrate's Court yesterday,: and dealt ..with tie police cases. Edward. Lbinax was charged that ori January 2 he did fail to answer questions under the Military Service Act, and furtlier thai lie dH publish a statement, to wit, '.'To hell with a registration .card and the .King of England, too," indicating disloyalty in respect to the present war, contrary to the War Regulations... ... Mr. H. P. O'Leary appeared for accused, who pleaded not guilty. William Alexander Sutherland, exmilitary policeman, 'said that about 4.30 p.m. on January 2 he was in the Empire Hotel with a sergeant-major, and saw the accused there. Accused had some conversation with the sergeantrinajor on conscription. Witness then-asked him if he had a registration enrd. Ho said he had, hut objected to showing it. Finally he said ho was j not registered, and used tho .words, "To hell with a registration card and the King of 'England, too." Witness then coaxed tho accused outside the hotel, and handed him to Censtablo Graham. Tlio constable asked him his. namo, and he replied, "Go to hell and find out.". He was then asked for his enrolment card. Accused rcpliod, "Go to hell and find it." The constable tben arrested him. To Mr. .O'Leary: Accused was under the influence of liquor when arrested. Witness held no.official position, and he aeked the man _ if he was enrolled on his own initiative. Witness had several drinks during the day, but was not drunk. Mr. O'Leary: You started to crossexamine this man?—" Yes." Mr. O'Leary: Was it not natural to expect tho man to tell you to "go to hell" for your TinperTmonce?—"Perhaps so." _ .■,,',., Witness, continuing, said he did not know the sergeant-major. Ho picked him up before going into the hotel. He was i) returned coldior. At. this stage Inspector Marsack asked for an adjournment for a week as Constable Graham, who arrested the accused, had been called away owing t/> the serious illness of his father. Tho casp was adjourned as requested. Two young women —E-;ina Stewart and Ivy Myrlo —pleaded guilty to being idle and disorderly, in that -they pos- ■ sossed nn lawful visible means of supoort. Kathleen Henderson, a yuung H'oman, who had been previously convicted, was committed to Pakatoii for a ooriod of 12 months. A seaman named Phillip George Kozler was charged, with disobeying a maintenance order in respect of his daughter, the arrears amounting to £7 7s. 6d., and further a maintenance order was sought against him for tho support of another child. On the first charge lie was convicted ami ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and on the second he was ordered to pay 10s. a week.

JUDGMENT SUMMONS. Judgment summons cases were dealt with aa follow:—William Wakefieldwas ordered to pay C. J. Johnson the sum of £7 14s. on or before January 24, in default seven days' imprisonment; A. Burns was ordered to pay S. H. Jonsen £4 4s. 2d. by January 24 or undergo three days' imprisonment.'
CLAIM FOR RENT.
In the defended case of V. Jensen v. Mrs. M. E. Leitch, a claim for £5 for balance of rent, judgment was given for plaintiff for tie amount claimed with costs totalling £112s. Mr. H. F. Von Haasfc appeared for plaintiff and Mr. Howie for the defendant.
