CANADIAN AND NEW ZEALAND CHEESE

The following figures fnirly_ indicate the positions Canadian and New Zealand cheese hold on the English markets. From 1908 up to 1912 Canadian cheese averaged over the whole season of each year £1 per ton more than New Zealand cheese; in 1913 Canada improved its lead, averaging £1 15s. over the Dominion; it held this lead throughout 1914, but in 1915 it had to take second place, New Zealand leading by 18s. 4d. a ton. Maoriland, however, could not keep up with the pace, and in 1916 dropped into second position, but was very close up, the differ* once being only Bs. 4d. per ton in favour of Canada. These figures go to show that in open competition there is very little difference between the products of the two countries. When w» come to 1917, however, the_ whole position is changed. The Imperial Government stepped in and bought tho New Zealand output, but left the Canadian free, the result being that Canadian cheese averaged £29 ss. per ton more than New Zealand. This in the aggregate meant the loss of just under ono million sterling to New Zealand, and represents a gift to that extent in tho way of cheap cheese to the British consumer. One wonders why {Jew Zealand is especially picked out to make this contribution.
