SOLDIER SETTLERS
AN ENOOUfiAGING KEPORT.
The Now Zealand Government has up- till the present placed on the land 600 soldier settlers, and the number is steadily increasing. The Department is instructed to prcparo for the Minister annual reports concerning every soldier settlement, and Mr. Massoy has just received tho first of these annual reports. It is from the Lamont Settlement, in Southland.-
Tho Lamont Settlement, .comprising 745 acres of first-class land, About 13 miles from Invercargill, was subdivided into five sections and thrown open for selection by discharged soldiers in December, ; 1916. One section is still unseleotod, but the lessees on the remaining four sections are a good typo of settler, having farming experience and being willing workers. All tho tenants; are showing themselves capable farmers, and the settlement promises to prove' very successful. Each lessee is looking forward to paying off his mortgage to tho Crown in tho near future. Two of the tenants bavo agreed to take a portion each of the section not yet selected. Appreciation is expressed at the action of farmers near the settlement in assisting tho soldier settlers by selling them stock under its value, making thorn a prosent of seed oats and potatoes, in some cases stock, and giving them the use of any implements they desiro.
