A Press Association telegram from Nelson yesterday announced the sudden death of Mr. Thomas Field, founder of the Wilkins and Field Hardware Com? pany. Deceased was aged 85, and was well known in Nelson and tho West Coast iii the early days. Deceased was on a visit from Auckland, where lm had been living for some years past. He was the father of Mr. Thomas Field, M.P.

Professor Thomas C. Trueblood,' who occupies tho chair of oratory in the University of Michigan, U.S.A., will arrive in Wellington from Rotorua on Saturday, and while here will address a public meeting on "America and,the War."

The death occurred in Westport on Saturday of Captain Oliver Powell, who was well known and highly respected in Wanganui. The lato Captain Powell commanded at. different 'times the Stormbird, Oreti, and other.steamers.

Homeward bound on Monday night from active service, Private T. \V. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Davis, of Feathcfston, became suddenly ill oh the train, at Tho Summit, and on arrival at Featherston had to be conveyed to the Military Hospital.

Mr. Joshua Jones, well-known in connection with claims against the Gov eminent in respect of Mokau lands, died at New Plymouth on Monday. ■

' C'ablo advice lias been received by the Base Records Office in Wellington stating that Captain Robert Briffault lias been awarded the Military Gross. As this officer is not a member of tho Now Zealand Expeditionary Force, liis next-of-kin is not known at Base Records, which asks us to publish tho fact.

Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Ltd., have received advice of tho death on Monday ot their Adelaide manager, Mr. lE. W. Van Sendon, after a.-brief illness. Mr. Van Senden was widely "known in business circles in tie Dominion. . For many years he was ono of the prominent buyers at the New Zealand wool sales, and he was also a recognised authority on merino sheep.
