WOMEN WAR WORKERS

A HINT FROMAMEEICA. • American women aro throwing themselves whole-heartedly into "war'work, and they appear in their various experiments and enthusiasm to he very like what British women were)in the first few weeks of August, 1914,' when we had not, so to speak, "found'ourselves", and settled down to tho selfimposed task as to "tho daily round, tho common task." A few words of warning in tho "Delineator" just to hand rend like a reminiscence of the early days of the war. One suggestion, however, does not apply to us. The "Delineator" advises women "first of all, to keep cool." Only a very few of us rushed off at a tangent and made ourselves conspicuous by impulsive and ill-advised efforts which led to nowhere at all. "Why," asks the paper above quoted, "do the hysterical, the spectacular, the shortsighted thing, when a little thought would be productive of a really good ideaP "We know the mother of three children who says she has goncin for Red Cross nursing. Sho is gadding about all day long, trying to raise funds and enthusiasm, while her children roam tho neighbourhood, and her • Husband sits down to cold and belated meals.

"Wβ know another woman who has donned a fascinating khaki uniform, and dis driving an automobile for a trucking firm. This woman has'wealth, and is a splendid executive. -Why does she waste herself on the cheaply spectacular ?'■' ■ ■ • ■ • ■••

The concluding advice is that "the woman who in-this war sees her home not as an isolated unit, but as an insoparable portion of the community, n'lio endeavours to make her every war effort or sacrifice, a part of the community's ultimate welfare, is doing the biggest thing she can for the nation."

Many Royalties are ardent collectors. Among them is the Queen of Italy, who has a great fancy for collecting the shoes of bygone celebrities, and has some very beautiful, as well as interesting, treasures in an admirable state of preservation: Perhaps the most fascinating of these is iv shoe worn by Joan of Arc; and those of Mary Queen of Scots and Marie Antoinette are.also full of interest. Another curious fancy is that of the Queen of Denmark, who collects eyeglasses of celebrated men. The oxTsarina found. antique- warming-pans interesting souvenirs, and at the Imporial Palace she had the most. completo set of these domestic utensils in the world. Altogether, her ex-Im-perial Majesty has nearly seventy specimens, most of these being valuable on account of their historic interest, and some on account of their beautiful artistic design. One curious specimen is of finely-burnished metal, with the pan-lid marked liko the fare of a clock. Ancient clockworks to it actually exist, and it is evident that its usos were convertible. Some of these pans are of enormous size.
