TWO FRENCH STEAMERS LOST London, January 3. The French official report of losses through enemy submarines during tho week is as under:— Arrirals 736 Departures 756 Sunk over 1600 tons 2 v Sunk under 1600 tons — Unsuccessfully attacked 2 —Aub.-N.Z; Cable Assn.-Reuter. [Last week only two French vessels were sunk—ono over and one under 1600 tons.] ITALY LOSES~i~E STEAMER Rome, Jiinuary 3. An Italian official report states that during the week one steamer over 1500 tons and one sailer under a 100 tons have been sunk by submarines. Two steamers were unsuccessfully attacked. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-Reuter. [Last week's losses were three steamers over 1200 tons, and ono sailing ship over and two under a hundred tons.] LOSS OF THE ANTILLES A LACK OF PROPER ESCORT. Washington, January 3. Tho Court found that the American steamer Antilles was sunk owing to lack of proper escort.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. WORK OF ThTInESWEEPERS NEARLY A THOUSAND BRITISH VESSELS EMPLOYED. London, January 3. It is stated on good authority that 967 minesweepers aro employed around the British Isles. They swept up 4615 mines during 1917, and have removed about 9000 since the outbreak of the war. Tho vessels sweep an average area of 2000 square miles a day. Between 15,000 and 20,000 men arc involved in the operations.—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.
