MAGISTRATE'S COURT

On New Year's night, according to the polico evidence, a serious assault was being committed by one Robert John Ashley, on Don.ild M'Donald, at the Red Light Boardirighouse, 42 CJhuzV.ee fjtreeit. When two policemcn who. were sent for Reached tho premises a .man named George L. Johnston, who was standting'.in the doorway, immediately retired insiile and shut the door on the constables. The latter managed) to get inside, and Johnston thereupon rilslied into the room where M'Donald was being assaulted, shut and. locked the door. The constables forced their way into the room, and' arrested, Johnston and. Ashley. The former was chargejl with obstructing tho constables while in the execution ■of their duty, ai)i was fined £i, with the alternative of serving 28 days in gaol. The case against Ashley, who was charged with assaulting M'Donald, was adourned for a 1 week, as the latter was' in Hospital suffering from a scalp, wound. For committing an indeennt net in Lambton Quay on Tuesday evening Uriah Mullins was fined £3, with tho option of fourteen days' imprisonment. James Joseph Fifesroy, convicted of using obscene' language in Vivian Street, was fined • £3, with the alternative of fourteen days' imprison ment. For insobriety two first offenders were convicted and discharged.
