THE NEW YEAR DECORATIONS , Appended are personal notes on soma of tho New Zealand officers mentioned in tho New Year list of-'Royal hendurs:— 1 Colonel \C. M. Begg, C.8., C.M.G., is a well-known medical practitioner or Wellington. He was an officer of tlio' New Zealand Medical Corps before tliowar, and held the appointment ol Assistant Director "of Medical Services, Wellington district. For his war services he was mentioned ill dispatches in 1915, and' gained tlie 'decoration C.M.G. Major J. M. Richmond, D.5.0., M.C., is.tho eldest son of Mr. Maurice Richmond, of Christchurch, who was formerly professor of law. at Victoria College. Major Richmond held a commission in the R.N.Z.A., and in 1914 was 'appointed Assistant-Military Secretary to General Godley. Ho left for the front with tho Main Body of the Nutf ' Zealand Expeditionary Forco as . a member of General Godley's personal staff, and has seen service on Gallipoli and' in France, winning the Military Cross. A younger^brother is about to enter camp. Lieutenant-Colonel J. H. .Whyte, D.5.0., who has gained another bar to the D.5.0., was a trooper in tho First | » Now Zealand Contingent for South Africa. Subsequently he joined the Seventh Contingent, and served right ' through the war. He holds the Queen's Medal with four clasps, the King's Medal with two clasps, and the for his South African service. Atter the war ho decided to take up a military career, and lie w;\s one of four New Zealand officers sent Homo lor training. After training lie ivaj srationcd at Napier, as acting-ljngade-major of the Wellington Mounted Rjflo Brigade. Ho was. mentioned in dispatchos and won tho D.S.O. two years a °Lieut.-Col. G. T. Hall, C.M.G., was formerly -on' the staff of Messrs. and Co., in Wellington., In tlio Territorials iie held tho rank of major . in the A.S.C. He left with the Mam Body in charge of tho canteens, and. saw service in the Mediterranean opcr- ■ ations.. Dawson, C.M.G., was a captain in No. 1 ■ (Auckland) Divisional ' Signal Company before the war Ho is now acting as D.A.A. and Q.M.lx. to the Now Zealand Expeditionary Force in England. Ho was mentioned in dispatches ill 1915. Major Dawson also saw service in' South Africa, and holds the Queen's Medal with three clasps, and the King's .Medal with two clasps. - • Lieut.-Col. G. A. King (bar to D S 0.) was killed in action recently just after taking over, the command of the Canterbury Infantry Batahon. In New Zealand he was the officer m command of No. 4 (Waikato) Group '■ Major Edward J. Hulbert, who has received a bar to the D.&.0., is a son of Mr. C. P. Hulbert. of Hargreaves Street, Wellington (aiormer Mayor of Chr?stchurch) and is a liepliew of Mr. Charles Hill, sen., of Island Bay. Before ho enlisted he was in the Postal Department in Wellington. He went „ away with the Main Body, and has lately returned to New Zealand on leave. Ho was an enthusiastio signaller, and sacrificed much time and energy to the instruction of the men in the old volunteer days. 1 Major H. M. W. Richardson, M.C., D.5.0., was for some years before the war broke out a member of the New Zealand Staff Corps, and Adjutant of the sth (Wellington) Eegiment. Late* lie was appointed fSaff officer' to. the Wellington Military District, with headquarters at Palmerston North. In | 1916 he left for the front in charge of a reinforcement draft, and he has since been on active service in France. He saw service in the South African war in 1901-1902, and holds the Queen's Medal, with four clasps. For service in France he has previously been awarded the Military Cross. Lieutenant-Colonel A. B. Charters, ( C.M.G., D.5.0., was formerly a school inspector in tho Wellington Education District. He left New Zealand with the rank of major in the Second Reinforcements,, and on arrival in Egypt was placed in. command of the New Zealand Base. There he remain-* ed until the New Zealand troops went to France, when he was given the command of the Otago Battalion, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. In France has has been through all the big engagements in which the Now Zealauders have taken part—at the Somme, Messines, and the heavy fighting m October last. Last Christmas he received the decoratiou of C.M.G., in recognition of Ins services while commanding in Egyfjt. Colonel Charters also served in the South African war, and holds the Queen's Medal, with three clasps. . <• Captain Bruce Ilaultain' Morison, Military Cross, is a son of Mr. C. B. Morison, XC., of Wellington, and a grandson of the late Colonel Hau tain, of Auckland. He was educated at Wanganui College, where he was in tho cadets for eight- years, being captain for two years. Both at Wanganui and subsequently at Mho!. College, Oxford, lie'distinguished himself in athletics. When war broke out he was working in his father's office. Ho volunteered at once, and obtained » commission in Colonel Malone s regiment in the Main Expeditionary Force. Captaiii Morison was through the landinß on Gallipoli and ,tke fights at Krithia and Quinn's Post, where lie was wounded. On recovering he went to France, and was wounded at the Soinmo. He was right through the Battle of Messmes also, and just at ' end of the fight was wounded for the third time. In the Passchcndaelc operations his company took part in the .t - tack on Gravenstafel Ridge.
