CRICKET
WELLINGTON V. CANTERBURY SOUTHERN TEAM IN A STRONG POSITION By Telesrsmh—Frees Association. Christchurch, January 1. Tbo intorprovincial cricket match between Canterbury and 'Wellington was resumed this morning in magnificent weather. There was a good attendance, and a full day's play ended in Canterbury being in a very strong position, Wellington having been so far quite outplayed. This was the result of good bowling on the part of tho local men, and batting that was very solid, if not spectacular. In Canterbury's first innings Pcrrin played tho bowling correctly and confidently, and with a very straight bat. The Wellington bowling was never loose, though it never looked very deadly. Harris, who got three wickets for nineteen was not tried till very late in the innings, and some thought that Brice placed too much reliance on Ill's fast bowlers. Hiddlestone bowled very well, but sent down a lot of loose stuff. Wellington's batting was disappointing, for there was not a really good partnership in the inniugs. Burton, who made top score, should have been twice stumped before ho was in doublo figures. Later on, however, he showed a very good defence. Condliffe.was tho grandest batsman on tho side. Ho played both Read and M'Ewin very correctly, and his scoring shots were powerful and welltimed. Drice's was a hitting innings, and his score of 18 was the result of enterprising batting, several of his drives going to tho fence like a shot. C4arrod also got his 14 by somo hefty hits. Both Read and M'Ewin bowled consistently well. The wicket was in capital order to-day, though there was enough moisture in it to give the bowlers considerable assistance. Scores:—
