WET NEW YEAR'S DAY

DULL HOLIDAY IN THE CITY,

Regarded as a holiday, New \ear 6 Day of 1918 was not a success. Momhi" came to the accompaniment o. a stitf northerly gale, with l>W ram, and plans for excursions out or tho city were mostly abandoned at bieakfasttime. The wind reached the force of a galo'at tin.es, and the ran clouds overhead showed no break. Later n the morning the wind veered round to the south, and the, nun tor an hour was very heavy indeed. The water flooded side channels, encroached on JSvements, and ran in streams down links About noon the wind fell, and the rain stopped. The sky remained dull and .lowering., however, and the holiday was spoiled. The harbour was very rough in the morning, and possen'"crs from Eastbourne by the Cobar had a rough experience. The spray broke over the boat fieely, and the Cobar reached tho l'erry Wharf nearly half an hour late, it having been deemed advisable to abandon tl.o usual direct conrse across tho harbour. Few excursionists were prepared to brave the elements, and the holiday time-table , that had been arranged for tlie ferry boats was abandoned. The trains had a light day. The people who would have gone to tho seaside resorts if the weather had favoured them stayed under shelter, and the holiday service that would have been run if the sun had shone was not required. Tho suburban tram services were similarly affected. The weather was better in the evening, and the entertainments offering in tho city vere well patronised.
