GERMANS ATTACK ON CAMBRAI FRONT SHORT LENGTH OF TRENCH ' ENTERED . _ London, December 31. Sir Douglas Haig reports: "As the result of successful counter-attacks, Wβ' have regained the moro important parts of tho positions, on the Welsh Ridge, and have taken prisoners. The enemy retains a portion of the front trench near La Vacquerie and south of Marcoing. We advanced our line last night a short distance on each side of the Ypres-Staden railway."—Aus.N.Z. Sir Douglas Haig reports: "The enemy this morning renewed the attack on the Welsh Ridge on a twelve hundred yards front. His troops in the southern portion of the attack temporarily, with the assistance of liquid fire, entered-a trench, hut our counterattack drove him out. GERMAN OFFICIAL REPORT. (Rec. January 1, 8.35 p.m.) London, December 31. A German official report states: "Wo gained possession of trenches southward of Marcoing and northward of La Vacquerie.
