TJnder tho auspices of tho Wellington branch of tho British and Foreign Sailors' Society, about sixty of tho men from ships iri port wore taken out to Seatoiin Park in a special car and given a real good time. The arrangements were made and carried out by Mr. D. M'Callum, who also distributed tho prizes at a pleasant gathering in the evening. The men expressed themselves as being very grateful for the kindness and attention shown to them by the society during the wliolo of the tihristmas season. It is interesting at this stage to read what tho Right Hon. Lord Beresford has to say on tho subject of tho society's work in its official organ, "Chart and Compass." Under tho heading "After a Hundred Years, he says: "It would bo impossible to overrate the good work that has been done during the last 100 years by the British and Foreign Sailors Society. Their patriotic worlc has been incalculably increased during tho war. Over 500 vessels have been destroyed at sea by mines and torpedoes, and tho officers and men havo been cared for by the institutions under the control or the British and Foreign Sailors, bociety. In addition to the relief, el-el-, ter, and comfort they have given to th« shipwrecked men, and those who have been ruthlessly attacked in merchant ships the British and Foreign Sailors Sty have looked after the relatives of those sailors' dependants who were thrown into crnel distress. They have aha taken upon themselves the duty o send ng parcels to over 1000 forlorn and distressed merchant seamen mrnn- , unned in Germany. Without this ZfghtM act, there is of these men would starve, me so ciety also takes boys of from seven to ten years of age and educates them fer , sea career, and sees that they get apprenticeship in the merchant stops."
