Off OVERSEAS VESSELS.
A' discussion at the last meeting of the Otngo Harbour Board on the :t----fusnl of the Government to extend (at n. cost of the barricade at the Victoria Wharf tor overseas vessels so as to accommodate two ships led to some straight talk about tho ineffectiveness of the monsnrps taken, it being stated amongst other things that overseas vessels had been alongside an unbarricaded wharf nt Dunedin. The chairman (Mr. J. Loudoiri Paid that the whole poliev for protection of overseas vessels was more or less a farce. He knew that stuff had been allowed to be. shipped in an overseas vessel oven without tho shippers end packers being nsked for a declaration that they could certify that the stuff was honestly packed. He thought ihe whole thing was a scandal, and tho sooner the people rose up and demanded that the authorities take steps for safety in the interests of the community and tho Empire, the better. I* the IMencfi Minister could not see that hi<> subordinates had the necessary things done, the people must take a hand. Mr. .1. H. Walker moved: "Tint the board demand from the Government thnt sufficient barricade accommodation he provided at Dunedin for two vessels." The motion was carried.
