The total number of shipe making tho tTaneit of the Panama Canal during tho tiscal year ended June 39 in seagoing traffic was 1876, saye tho "Byron." In tho fiscal year 1916 tho total wae 787; in 1915 it was 1086. The aggregate gross and net tonnage of tho 187? ships in the year 1917, according: to the ruleß of measurement for tho Panama Canal, were 8,530,121 and 6,009,3581 tons respectively. The cargo carried through tho Canal amounted to 7,229,255 tons of 2240 pounds. Ships making the passage of tho Canal without cargo, including uaval shipe and pleasure craft, as well as merchant ehips in ballaet, aggregate 284. Of these, 187 wore in transit from the Atlantic to the. Pacific, and 97 from the Pacific to the Atlantic; net tonnages ivero 574,881 and 219,907, respectively. The average net tonnago of all ehips was 520S tons. The average Bet tonnago of the ships carrying cargo was 3275 tons. The average ldading of tho ships with cargo was 4541 long tone.
Tho Opawa -will sail at 8 o'clock to-night for Blenheim, not tu-niorrow night, as had been ndvertiied. To-night, as last night, there will be no sailing from Wellington of an Ancnor steamer for Nelson. Both the Kaitoa and Nikau were at Nelson for the holidays, mid the last-named steamer will arrive at Wellington to-morrow, sailing in the evening, as usual. Tho Kaitoa is duo on Friday, and will sail in the evening. On New Year's Day and Wednesday thero will be no aaitinK. from Wellington. The Mapourlka will sail at noon to-day direct for Wcßtport and Qrcymouth, omitting Nelson on account of being a day late in her running. Tho Komata arrived yesterday -with coal from Wcstport. Her crew will bo paid off to-day until after the holidays. Tho Karu sailed from Worser Bay al 6.40 a.m. yesterday for farakoho. Tho Policrua is due nt Wellington on Friday with chceso from New Plymouth. Tho John will rcccivo cargo until 3 p.m. 10-morrow at Duncdin, and will sail in tho evening. Tho Kowhai sailed on Saturday night for Groymouth to load for Wellington. Sho ia due at tho end of this week. Tho ferry Btcaraor Mararoa, which left Wellington on Saturday at 7.46 n.m., did not arrivo iu Lyttclton until 1,60 p.m. on Sunday, about four hours and a half overdue. Tho ship's barometer was down to £3.72 when the vessel left Wellington, and on reaching Wellington Heads tho vessel encountered a very strong southerly to south-west gale and lilgh seas. Her bow was constantly awaeh, and tho Bpray gave those in charge on the bridge a rough timo. The woather improved on rounding the Kaikouras at about 9 a.m. Tho trip is stated to have been one of the roughest tho Tesscl Tia» mfldo during the year, and tho 600 nasscngcri epent a, very unplcaeant time. Aβ tho Blenheim could not loud coal on Monday on account' of the coal-workcra rofuaing to work late, her departure for Havclock and l'clorus Hounds has buen postponed till Thursday at noon. Intending passengers are asked to act accordingly. At 6.40 p.m. yesterday the Monowai b:imcd for Lyttelton. The vessel will remain at Lyttcltou until Friday night, when sho will sail for Wellington. If the passenger traffic warrants it sho will Bail on Halurday night for Lyttelton. It is interesting to note in connection with tho appointment of Mr. I. 1 . (I.
