ARGENTINE WHEAT

- TTheat shipments from Argentina to the. United Kingdom duriug tho first seven mouths of tho current year totalled 75,266 tons. Of maizo 117,781 jtons. and of oats 28.711 tons, woro for- . warded for tho same destination. Exports of wheat to Great Britain in the corresponding portion of 1916 were 1,536,642 tons, and in 1915 2,338,197 ■tons. Down to tho end of July tho •British Govornmont had availed ifsolf of tie decree- permitting it to take, from tho Republic 180,000 tons of the .cereal, but had exercised tho right to tho extent,of.,only half that quantity. It will bo remembered that in tho arrangement with Great Britain tho Argentine Government stipulated- for the .option to , demand, the return of wheat 'Snipped from that country for tho British.Government in tho form of equivalent quantity from Canada or Australia, tho'Government, being called Tipon. to declare by the end.of September whether-it intended to exerciso that option. That England had drawn upon Argentina's wheat resources for less.than 50 per cent, of the total reserved indicated that the need in tho ;United'Kingdom was not very pressing, but hadtbe Republic been called ■upon to find the full 180,000 tons it is extremedy unlikely, in view of the lumper harvest now in sight, that the condition requiring replacement of the grain would be enforced.
