Soldiers Entertained at Sayes Court,

On Friday afternoon about seventy returned soldiers were entertained by Mrs. Louis Smith at Sayes Court, Aurora Terrace. The men were invited from tho Victoria Hospital, Loivry Bay Hospital, Newtown Hostel, rnd Returned Soldiers' Club, and ull thoso wiio availed themselves of tho invitation had a thoroughly enjoyar/Ie time. By the kind permission of Messrs. Fuller, the Johnson Rovue Company gave a, performance nlwiost the same as at night, and tho men wera entertained with songs, recitations, and other items all equally enjoyable. Besides the large 'foa'wingrooni, two private sitting-rooms were used, and tea was served in the dminn--room- The rooms have berm latefy renovated, and looked very charming with lovely flowers set alwmfc everywhere. Blue delphinium and laikspiir decorated the drawing-room, brown gallardias and coreopsis were in another room. Mrs. Smith's pri rate sittingroom was gay with swee/fc peas and Dorothy Perkins roses, arid in the diu-inp,-room were sweet pea.'/, stocks, and fcliage. During the afternoon each of th 6 guests took a dip in the Christmas hamper, and drew 'Out a i-"".rprise-packet, getting many useful thingsbrushes, shaving-sticks., pipes, safetyrazors, pens, pocket-boftke, etc. This caused much fun and merriment, and after tea the guests departed with many thanks to tlioir b/jstess, who was assisted in entertaining by some of tho visitors at Sayes Court,. Abont twenty of the invited guests were unable to come in the afternoon., so Sirs. Smith entertained them to dinner, and afterwards to a theatre fiarty at Pis Majesty's Theatre.

W.C.T.U. Tho monthly meeting of the Wellington Central 'Union was held ill tho Y.M.C.A. on Frida.y. Mrs. M'Donald presided. Tho treasurer reported that twenty-six member s had joined (luring the year, and thai the membership now stood at 102 financial members. This immber entitled tho union to send two delegates to tho annual convention to be held in Tiuaaru early nest year. The selection of the delegates was deferred until tho February mealing. Miss Cocker? 11 gave an interesting address on the need of sincerity in all Christian wort;. The trend rf modorn life frequently led well-intentioned people to do much that was cf little value to the neglect of higher virtues. Miss Powc/d, organising secretary of tho Dominion, was present, and gave an interesting account of her work, especially aiaiongst the smaller unions. She referrod to the attitude taken' by tho W.C.T ,TJ. in conncction with tho Social Hy/ziene Bill, and iirged all unions to demand tho immediate establishment, of free clinics for the treat-1 meat of ,'venoreal diseases.

Fcilding Notes. Mrs. 'Harper has gone to Nelson. Mrs. Davidson has returned from Wellington. Mrs. Reedy (Hawke's Bay) h tho guest 'of Mrs. Elliot. Mr?. Murphy lias returned from Diiwlf.c's Bay, and leaves shortly for Rotonua. Mrs. Miles has gono to Taupo and Rotorua, Miss 'Weymouth accompanying i her. Mrs. Haggitt has gone south. sfrs. Stewart has gono to Hastings. J.vlrs. Murdoch and Miss Murdoch (Napier) are the guests of Kirs. Ma6<j.n. Mrs. Hitchings has gone to tVellingtjon. Mrs. Ward lias taken her family to 'dip seaside. Miss O'Halloran has gone t<s Auckland Mrs. Alymer, who was in town a short time ago, has returned to Wellington. Mrs. Cobbc and Miss Cobbe pie in Rotorua.

An Interesting Engagement. An interesting engagement, states vhe "Queen," is that of Lieutenant 'Charles Clifford and Miss Dorothy iJornyold. On arrival in New Zealand he worked on a farm for two years. In 1882 ho bought a station near Blenheim. and carried it on for eight -.ears. In 1890, owing to a breakdown in health, ho left New Zealand lor Tasmania, where lie lias lived over since. At first ho farmed there, but Las of late beenconnccted with business enterprises in Ilobart. Lord Clifford recently published "A Forecast of tho Twentieth Century"—an essay dealing with the causes of war and the settlement of international problems. In a V.A.D. in England. Miss Laura Salmond, who has been engaged in agricultural pursuits in Enplaiid for the past nine months, is now in the V.A.D. at Walton-on-Tliamos. Writing to friends, Misa Salmond says: —'l am, working with the dining-room staff. It's just meals all the tnne like an hotel. We have to get up at 5.30, and start wcik at G.io. We havo three relays i-.t breakfast to get, and then we wash i,p and clean everything wo can. Mrs. A. Wilson (Wanganui) is staying af, Lowry Bay with her mother. Mrs. W. Kennedy, Dr. Wilson is still abroad on activo service. Mrs. Ernest Hadficld and her family are staving in Sutherland Road, Lyall Buy, for six weeks. Colonel and Mrs. Mac Donald have taken a cottage at Packakanki for January. Sister Ethel Lewis will bo the guest of Mrs. Alan Johnson until fhe 'oaves wit'i the next reinforcements for Evrnpo. Mnjor and Sirs. Sleeman are still in the south, and are not returning to Afcllington till the end of this month.

Mrs. Grierson, who lias ton staying at Miss Malcolm's, is now tlio guest of her daughter, Mrs. 0. Griffiths. at Heretaunga. On Thursday last a most enjoyable day was spent on the Seatonh cioquet lawn, when visitors from tho Kelburti Club met the Scatoun players. Mm. Henderson and Mrs. Fuller, of Kelburn. played Mrs. Stone and Mrs. Ciitchley; Mrs. Remington md Mrs. Christie played Mrs. Bradley End Mrs. M'Girr; Mrs. Rigg and Mrs. Williams played Mrs. Berry and Mrs. iV'agill. Tho Seatmin Club won all the matches.

Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Hi't.ohings (Pending) aro the guests of Dr. and Mrs. Perkins.

Mr. Alec Webster, tho gonor.il' inspector of tho Bank of Australasia, Melbourne, will arrive on a visit to their daughter, Mrs. Grey Young, of liarori, shortly after Christmas.
