By Telegraph—Press Association, 1 Dunedin, December 22. A returned, soldier named Charles "Wilson, while returning from Dunedin to Port Chalmers Under escort yesterday afternoon, escaped from tho train at Burkes. He later, went to Port Chalmers and commandeered a small boat and attempted to row to Quarantine Island. The sea was rough and Wilson was seen at 6-«i0 p.m. straggling in the water. The puiice secured a launch and went to the rescue, but Wilson had disappeared. The body has not been recovered.
