Sir James Allon, Minister of Defence,. left for the south last night. Ho has arranged to visit the Bruce electorate, and is likely to be away from Wellington until early next month. The Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, returned from Napier yesterday. Tho Hon. W. Frascr, Minister of Public Works, left for Christchurch last'night. 110 will stay there until Wednesday,. and then will proceed to Otago. Ho will bo away from Wellington about a fortnight. The Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) returned from tho south yesterday morning. The death of Mr.' Stephen James Hobbs occurred' on December 12 at his la to rosidence, Hanuia, after a comparatively short illness. He'was the sou of. "tho late Charles Hobbs, a retired naval officer, whose ships were tho Princess Royal, Shannon, Victory, Algiers. Duke of Wellington, and Falcon. Mr. Hobbs was born in Wellington on September 12, 1870, and followed farming for fifteen years in Takapn, five years in Feilding, and three'years in Hamua districts. Ho married in February', '1892, Miss Alico M'Laughlin. daughter /if tho late Mr. .Tames M'Laughlin, Wellington, and their only . son, Charles Vivian, died on active service in France on December 10, 1916. Mr. Hobbs served on the Takapu, Taonni, and Hamua School Committees, and was a member of the directorate of the : Hanin'a Dairy Company. Mrs. Hobbs will have the sympathy <Jf a large circle of friends in her bereavement.
The death occurred at Auckland yesterday morning of Mr. J. A. Munro, accountant of the Marine Department, Wellington. The iate Mr. Munro, who was about 29 years of age, liail been ill for some time. He always took a (keen interest in military matters, and. rose to the rank of captain in tho Garrison Artillery. For some time .ho had charge'of Fort Ballance. He was a prominent member of tho Wellington Foothall Club, and leaves a widow, who was formerly Miss M. Watt,' of Roseneath. Corporal F. E. Poole, in action 111 France, left New Zealand with'the Fourteenth Reinforcements, and had been in the firing-lino up to the time of his death. Ho was the third son of Mr. and Mrs.'.H. J. Poole, of Lower Hutt, and was educated at the Terrace School. Prior -to his departure ho was engaged' in farming.. A, younger brother was killed at the Somme in. 1916. News has been received that. Sergeant.K. -M. Cole, has been awarded a Military Medal. He enlisted -with Lho advance Samoan Force, and afterwards re-enlisted ■ with . the 13th Artillery. Sergeant-Cole -was reported wounded nir October .13/■ He wa6 employed by Charles Begg and Co. heforo he went to the front. • , ' Mr. A. W. Fames, Audit Inspector at Ch'ristchurch, has been appointed Official Assignee in that city. Advice has been received that Pri-' vat-e Don Mathiesou, son of Major Mathieson, Commandant of the German Internment Camp on Somes Island, has been wounded in France. Private Mathicson has seen sen-ice in Gallipoli and in Franco, was the crack shot of .his battalion (the Otagos), as well as one of its representative players in the battalion's team in France. ' ,
