Hatch is tryins to get iowu to do the wciffht on Devotion in the Ca wata Cup, and the same horseman will have the mount on Lingerie in the FitJ herbert Handicap. l " e *'"" ■Iteporte received locally f !O m Elkr.iistate that Menelaus gallopod urv well yesterday, and he has advanced tu favour for the Auckland Oup. The iield owosini* the New Zealand Cup winner is' ur< a very strong one, and for such a ■mVvid stayer his impost should not u» lieyoixl the Martian gelding. The opening event at Ellorslie on Boxins Day is the Shortlaud Plato, one milo The conditioue of the race are bucli that Silver Tongue, runner-up to Estland in the O.J.C. Derby, will only have to carry 7sl. 41b. The Demosthenes gelding i 3 to be ridden by 0. Emerson. The lisht-weight jockey C. Emerson, who went through the ■ Woodvillo, Timaru, and Tauherenikau Mcotinge without a win. passed through here yesterday on his way to Ellerslie, where is to ride Telia in the Oup. The same evening he will return south and ride at Awanuni on the second day, after which he will - do the two remaining days at Ellerslie. It is his intention to hasten back south and catch the Greymouth Meeting, and the Hokitllta Meetings, both of which are held early in January. Tho good looking Slartiau two-year-old War , Jlarch has been taken to Ellorslic and will rnce in the handicap event on the second day of the meeting. Bhicla, who is in the same stables, is also at Ellerslie and will race on the second and third days. Of the meetings to be held on Boxing Day, the Auckland, Taranaki, and Manawatu fixtures look like being far more successful than tho Dunediu Meeting, which is only a one-day affair. The (Spring Meeting of the latter club was also a oneday affair, and as it was not a success the club will probably hold a single meeting of two days nejt season, if retrenchment is still in vogue. A Palinerston North sportsman who was in TV'ellington yesterday reports that the tracks at Awapuni are in flrst-class order, and if the weather remains line the going will be very fast on Boxing Day. The contest for the Palmerston North .Stakes, set down for decision on the second day of the Manawatu Meeting is being looked forward to with much interest by the supporters of Acre and Lingerie. At Feilding the filly beat the colt pointless, but it was alleged that Blrkenviilo had interfered with Acre and spoilt his chances. At Awapuni the distance is a furlong further, and this is expected to suit Acre better than Lingerie. The pair named will both be heavily supported, and they promise to quite overshadow Impediment, Nystad, and Crowhurst in public estimation. Locally, Devotion is in most demand for the Jtanawatu Cup, but there is also plenty of support for 1 Client. The Trenthatn trained mare will have the advantage of being thoroughly seasoned with racing, and tbis is a big factor tdwards success. Tho programme of the Racing Club's Summer Meeting is advertised in this issue. The Egmont Cup is worth 600 sovs., and all the other events are well endowed. Nominations close on January 18. There are two classic races on tho programme—tho Egmont Stales and the Hawera Stakes. A Press Association telegram from Melbourne states that the racehorse Wallace has been destroyed. He was twenty-six years old, and had become very feeble lately.
