The Wellington Harbour Board hos notified the Marina Department that on and after Monday, December 24, the respective • red- and green lights on Seatoun and Karaka Bay Wharves will be removed, and that in future no navigational lights will be shown from these wharves. MAPOURIKA DUE TO-NIGHT. The Mapourika left Westport at 4 p.m. yesterday for Nelson and Wellington, and is due here early this evening. At noon to-morrow she will sail for Picton and Nelson, tailing passengers, and on Tuesday at noon, when she sails for her usual weekly trip to Nelson and West Coast she will call at Picton. FIRE ON MB MONOWAI. Some alarm was caused on , the Union Company's e.s. Monowai shortly after ono o'clock on Tuesday morning by an outbreak of fire in the main hatch when the vessel was berthed alongside the King's Wharf, Auckland. On the fire being discovered, the firs brigade was summoned and arrived on the scene promptly. It was discovered that the hatch was empty, but for a heup of 6triiw which was alight. The flames were very speedily suppressed, and no damage was done to the vessel. At about seven o'clock this morning the Monowai is diic at \Wellington from tho north, and will berth at Taranaki Street Wharf to discharge 350 tons of cargo. Candlish, mate on the Huin, hag como ashore, and Mr. G. G. Sang has been engaged. Mr. G. M. Gormlie, wireless telegraphist on a Union Company's steamer, lias como ashore, and Mr. E. Brown has joined tho vessel. Mr. W. S. Smart has signed on tho articles of a Union Company's steamer as second engineer. Mr. R. G. Hallamore, of the Gisborno branch of the New Zealand Shipping Company, who has received notice of his transfer to Invercargill, will be succeeded by Mr. W. Beauchamp, late pccountant at the Napier cilice. Mr. P. (I. Moffatt lias accepted the position of harbourmaster and wharfinger at Motucka. He will combine the duties with those of the secretaryship, which he baa held for several years. Mr. H. 15. Short, assistant purser on tho Tβ Anau, has como ashore.

Mr. A; Gibsou has signed on tho Maori as third officer, in place o£ Mr. M. 0. Campbell, who has joined a Union Company's intercolonial steamer as extra third officer.

The collier Kowhai arrived last night from Greymouth, and the Kamo is due at 7 a.m. to-day from tho same port, *s> night the Kokifi will arrive from Westport. All of the vessels have full cargoes for Wellington ■ The Oorinna left Oamaru at 4 a.m. yesterday for Timaru, Lyttelton and Wellington, and is due here to-morrow morning. In the afternoon ehe will sail for Nelßon and New Plymouth. This morninp the Eosamond will arrive from Lyttelton, and to-morrow will sail for Blufl and Dunedln, taking general cargo. The Pateena, sailing at 12.45 p.m. to-day for Picton and Nelson, will take perishable cargo only. Only perishable cargo will be taken by the Maori sailing to-night for Lyttelton. The Invercargill, sailing on Saturday" at noon for Wanganni, will lay up at that port for the Christmas holidays, and is due back to-day week. The Itichardson steamer Eipplc will not return to Wellington until Friday next from Gisborne and Napier. She will bring wool from Coast stations, and will sail the same day for her usual ports of call. Tho Breeze, which came out of dock at Lyttelton on Monday, is practically a new ship, having undergone extensive alterations and improvements. To-day she will sail for Wcstport to load a cargo of coal for Waiujanui. According to Lloyd's estimate, the merchant vessel tonnage of the entire world is at present 48,683,000. The Westland Shipping Company's Defonder arrived at 5 p.m. yesterday from Grcymouth. A general cargo and timber will be put out here, and sho is to sail tomorrow for Hokitika. The John is to leavo Wanganui at noon to-day for Wellington. Her future movements are uncertain. The Himitangi arrived at Lyttelton yesterday from Chatham lilands. She will arrive at Wellington this afternoon, and will again sail for'the Islands on Thurs day next to load wool and stock lor the Canterbury port. The proposed changes in the examination of mußters and mates were to have tnken effect on January 1, 1918, but a Gazette notice states that they havo been postponed until further notice. The Ngatoro left Lyttelton last night for Greymouth, whore she will load c>'al for Wellington, being due- here on Monday. , - ' Tho Government steamer Hlnemoa returned to Blufl on Friday evening from Stowart Island,. and sailed again that night to? Company's I'oherua while in the Bullcr roadstead on Friday last. She was detained there by very bad weather, and the Bteanier was a good deal knocked about by the Eea. In No. 1 hold was stored a consignment of 21 casks of bMp ireaee. consigned to the Westiiort-Stookton Coal Company. These casks got adrift, and oil but eight of them were smashed, and the grease flooded the hold, In addition to the total loss of the grease, carjo In the hold, chiefly confectionery, and «omo furniture, was damaged, a proportion of it. irretrievably. The hold was in such a bad condition that the work of discharging it had to be undertaken by officers und crew rearing soa-boots. Tho viscous material had to be baled out.
