MASTERTON NOTES
The foundation stono of _t.lio Returned Soldiers' Club is to be laid iu Masterton on Thursday afternoon. Mr. A. P. "Whatman, who_ is largely lesponsiblo for the provision of the ilub, will be presented with a silver trowel. Tnc Mastcrton municipal gasworks showed a credit of £2781 for tho eiglit months of the financial year ending November 30. The pupils and ox-pupils of the Lansdowne School gave an entertainment in the Opera House on 'iuesday night, when a sum of £65 was taken. The Military Medical Board is at present sitting in Masterton. The Education Board is reported to bo negotiating for the purchase of five acres of land in the Perry estate, to tlio west of Masterton.'upon which to crect a Second Standard primary school. Tho Wairarapa Lady Liverpool Committee proposes sending £5 pe.r n-onth to the military authorities at notorua, for tho purpose of providing excursions for the soldiers in hospital there. The Finance Coimnitteo of the Masterton Borougli Council is to bring down a report upon the question of employing an efficient staff of plumbers to make drainage connections in the now drainage aroa on the deferred payinont system. The Wairarapa Lady Liverpool Committee has decided to supplement the Christmas dinner which will bo provided for the five hundred men remaining in the Featherston Camp. A resolution was proposed r.t the meetinf of tho Masterton Borough Council on Tuesday evening that the council will'not appeal for exemption from military service or extension of time for any of its employees drawn in tlio ballot. Tho motion did not nnd a seconder. Considerable quantities of benzine are reported to be stored in Masterton by private individuals, but tho Borough Council has no by-law dealing with tho matter.
