OBITUARY
DR. ELIZABETH GARRBTTANDERSON. London, December }8. Dr. Elizabeth Garrett-Anderson is dead, aged 71.—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn. [Dr. Elizabeth Garrett-Anderson, M.D. (Paris), is notable as a pioneer of women to practico medicino ai.d occupy important public positions. She began to study medicino in 1860, but tho Colleges of Surgeons and' Physicians refused to admit her to their examinations. She obtained a licence' to practice from tho Society of Apothecaries in 1865, and then passed tho medical examinations of the University of Paris, and obtained the M.D. degree in 1870. Subsequently she occupied important professional positions, and in 1896-97 was president of tho East Anglian Branch of tho British Medical Association. Sho became Mayor of Aldeburgli in 1908, and was tho first woman mayor elected in England. She was tho wife of the late J. G. S. Anderson, managing director of tho Orient Line, who died in 1907.]
