A SOLDIER'S REQUEST

Sir, —Will yon kindly permit n.e space in your valuable columns that 1 may voice an earnest appeal of cne .beyond the seas serving his country, to beg that his country's Government will in return for his services not permit any mortgagee to call up aw mortgage until, say, two years after the declaration of peace? I am sure hundreds of farmers and business men would hnil with delight any such magnanimous action of the Government in that respect, and it would also protect them from inevitable disaster that would follow -upon the_ calling up or any mortgage at the immediate conclusion of hostilities. The measures I am suggesting to the Government would iii 110 way bring any great hardships upon the monied man if he vere to. say, raise the interest to'a 1 certain decree from the time peace was declared until, such time as the Government deemed it would be safe for a mortgagor to appeal to the money niarket to reinstate his mortgage. There are hundreds of small farmers away defending their country against aggression from an infamous foe, that will fall absolute victims to the ™n ,ed man, unless some provision cf tho above natnrc is introduced to pievcnt anv such brutal possibilities eventuating. The present Act in force, making it impossible for a _ mortgagee to call up any mortgage while the war lasts, is simply splendid; but then for the first two Years at least, following the declaration of peace, money will t.e tar harder to obtain that it is at present. Trusting this appeal from one who has tasted the horrors of war, will not fall on deaf ears, and thanking you for your kindness and valuable tpace. I etC ' J A WOUNDIST) SOLDIER. Codford, England, Oct. 23.
