INTERN THEM ALL
HOW THE SOUTH SKA ISLANDS DEAL WITH GERMANS.
The authorities who control the islands in the Pacific are staunch advocates for the internment of all bermans. Mr. E. Conen a South .Sea Island trader, who recently returned to Sydney after an absence of mariy month's, expressed surprise when ho learned that there were Germans still at large in the community, "AH German trediiw houses in the Fiji, Samoan, and Tongan Islands have been closed up," he remarked. The alien enemy is not allowed to camon business of any description. Wltll the exception of a very small, number of Germans at Tonga and Samoa—and probably these have by this time como within the regulations—all 'Germans have been interned. Those who havo not been placed under a guard are not allowed to go beyond a mile melius of their homos without a permit, and must be inside their houses between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a_.m. "At Samoa the Germans were first of all sent to New Zealand; but the Government asked the authorities to establish internment camps on the islands. . , , "In Fiji, after the capture of the boat belonging to the See Adler, containing Count Luckner and other members .of the crew, further action was taken against the Germans. The Mayor of Levulta immediately called a meeting, at-which the people demanded the immediate internment of all Germans. Similar steps were taken in Suva. As a result of these meetincs the British authorities moved, and all Germans, together with their wives and families, were placed under guard. "On my return to Sydney I was surprised to seo how laggard the authorities had been. Germans whom I knew personally are allowed all tho liberties of free citizens. "Another thine that surprises me more is to find that the Chamber of Commerce—which vorked so hard to get all German businesses closed at Samoa and Tonga-sitting down and taking no steps to put down the Germans and their trade in Australia.
